Laune Rangers: 1-11
Played in good conditions in Keel on Sunday afternoon the holders Laune Rangers faced Milltown/Castlemaine in the 2013 Mid-Kerry Minor Championship Final.
Laune Rangers came into the game looking for their 8th consecutive title while Milltown/Castlemaine were hoping to upset this record and win their first title since 2005.
It was to be the Launesiders who would bring the title back over the Laune bridge with a 1-11 to 0-12 win but not before a second half comeback from Milltown/Castlemaine which made for a nail-biting final quarter.
Laune Rangers got the game underway with two points from Daniel Macbeth(frees) in the 1st and 4th minutes. Jonathan O’Sullivan replied for Milltown/Castlemaine with a pointed 45′ kick in the 5th minute to let the game 0-02 to 0-01 in Laune Rangers’ favour.
A quiet period followed as neither side were able to find a score until the 18th minute when Laune Rangers went further ahead. The Milltown/Castlemaine goalkeeper Cormac Leane fouled the ball outside the box and John O’Shea pointed the resulting free to let the game 0-03 to 0-01 in Laune Rangers favour going into the final 10minutes of the first half.
Points from Milltown/Castlemaine’s Jack McCarthy and Jonathan O’Sullivan(free) in the 21st and 23rd minutes of the half saw the game level at 0-03 a piece.
Laune Rangers pushed on however and finished the half strong with points from Daniel Macbeth, Westley Delaney(2), John Tyther and John O’Shea(free) to give the Killorglin side a 0-08 to 0-03 advantage at the short whistle.
It was Milltown/Castlemaine who made the better start in the second half with points from Gavin McKenna, Ciaran Griffin and Jonathan O’Sullivan in the opening 10 minutes to close Laune Rangers lead to just two points with 11 minutes played in the second half.
Daniel Macbeth extended Laune Rangers’ lead back out to three points in the 13th minute of the half with a well taken point before the game’s only goal came in the 14th minute. Shane Mangan shrugged off the Milltown/Castlemaine defenders and cooly slotted the ball past Cormac Leane in the Milltown/Castlemaine goals to give Laune Rangers a six point cushion mid-way through the second half.
To their credit Milltown/Castlemaine continued to battle hard and attacked the Laune Rangers’ backline in waves. Laune Rangers went down to 14 men in the 19th minute of the half when their solid midfielder Shane Daly received his second yellow card of the afternoon and was sent to the line by referee James O’Sullivan.
Milltown/Castlemaine notched up further points from Gavin McKenna, Jonathan O’Sullivan and David Roche to let the goal between the sides inside the final 10minutes of the game.
Gavin Horan popped another one over for Milltown/Castlemaine in the 26th minute to let just two between the sides, 1-09 to 0-10 with less than 5 minutes of normal time to play.
Daniel Macbeth scored his 5th point of the afternoon in the 28th minute to push Laune Rangers’ lead back out to three points, 1-10 to 0-10.
In a nail-biting finish Jonathan O’Sullivan closed Laune Rangers’ lead with two well taken points in the 30th and 32nd minutes of the game to let the minimum between the sides well into injury time.
Referee James O’Sullivan continued to let the game play and there were some nervous moments on both sides as Milltown/Castlemaine tried hard to penetrate the Laune Rangers defence while Laune Rangers battled hard to retain possession.
Laune Rangers’ Shane Mangan got the final score of the afternoon in the 34th minute to let the game 1-11 to 0-12 in Laune Rangers favour at the full-time whistle.
After the game, Mid-Kerry Board Chairman, James Doyle, presented the trophy to the Laune Rangers’ captain Colm O’Mahony. The Man-of-the-Match trophy was presented to Daniel Macbeth(Laune Rangers).
