JUNIOR: After 120 minutes of football, Gneeveguilla took the title of McElligott Cup Champions for 2019. The replay was played under lights in Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence in Currans on Friday evening. Laune Rangers played against a strong breeze and heavy rain in the first half and, after goalkeeper Vinny Costello pulled off a great save in the 6th minute, Gneeveguilla took a two point lead with a pointed 45 and free. However, Laune Rangers were ahead by the quarter mark, with points by Colm & Cian O’Shea (free) and Eoin Clifford putting them ahead by 0-3 to 0-2 with fifteen minutes played – Cian’s free coming after Mike Frank Russell made an outstanding catch from a seeking pass by David Mangan. Gneeveguilla levelled before forcing another save from Vinny Costello, but the East Kerry men were threatening and eventually they hit the net for a goal and the lead. Two more points have them a five point lead on the 24th minute. Rangers battled back into the wind and rain and a point each by the O’Shea brothers Cian and Colm left a goal between the sides. With the final play of the first half, a Mike Frank Russell free dropped short & Eamonn Carey reacted quickest to knock it into the net to level the game at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-5, Gneeveguilla 1-5. As luck would have it, conditions calmed shortly into the second half, meaning Laune Rangers did not have the benefit of the wind at their back for the second half that they had faced in the first. While the breeze was still blowing, Mike Frank Russell (a 50 free) and Eamonn Carey pointed Rangers ahead. However Gneeveguilla pointed twice to level the game at 1-7 a piece with 45 minutes played. A pointed Cian O’Shea free nudged Rangers ahead but a second Gneeveguilla goal swung momentum in favour of the men in yellow. Two Gneeveguilla points were nullified by points by Cian O’Shea (free) and Gabriel Griffin, and another was cancelled out by a point for James Hurley leaving two points between the sides. Gneeveguilla held on to win the game and the cup. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-11, Gneeveguilla 2-10.
