SENIOR: Two teams vying for promotion came head to head on Sunday afternoon as Laune Rangers hosted Churchill in Division 4 of the County League. The sides couldn’t be separated in a superb game of football that saw points shared at the final whistle. Laune Ranger started well, with Daragh O’Connor and Kieran Doona scoring points while Shane Daly struck the butt of the post with a shot at goal. However, three Ivan Parker pointed frees and Cillian Fitzgerald saw the visitors leading by two after ten minutes. Fiachra Clifford pointed for Rangers before Parker added another free to see Churchill ahead by 0-5 to 0-3 with a quarter played. Dáire Cleary and Daragh O’Connor both pointed for Rangers to level matters before Kieran Doona gave the home side the lead with a great point. Churchill struck their first goal in the 22nd minute as Ger McCarthy finished well to the bottom corner to regain the lead for his side. Ivan Parker kicked three further points (1 free) to stretch the lead but points by Patrick Carey & Kieran Doona brought Rangers back to within a goal at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-8, Churchill 1-8. Rangers scored four unanswered points at the start of the second half through Patrick Daly (free), Kieran Doona, David Costelloe & Daragh O’Connor to lead the game again, but a second goal for Ger McCarthy and Churchill wrestled the lead back again. A pointed free by Pa Daly was nullified by a great point by Cillian Fitzgerald before Daragh O’Connor scored a super point for Rangers. However, Churchill’s third goal – this one through substitute Tomás Lenihan – put Churchill 3-9 to 0-14 ahead with a quarter to play. Laune Rangers raised their game for the final stages with Pa Daly and Kieran Doona pointing before Churchill goalkeeper Eoghan O’Brien came upfield to score a 45 and Conor Daly pointed to restore the four point gap. Rangers goalkeeper Jason Browne also put a 45 between the sticks before Kieran Doona scored a brace to bring his tally to 0-7 (all from play) for the day. Ivan Parker pointed for Churchill, but Rangers were battling hard. Dáire Cleary saw his shot flash over the bar for a point, before team captain John Tyther levelled the game with a great point. There was more time is this fantastic game for more drama. Laune Rangers substitute Mark O’Connor scored a great point to put Rangers ahead deep in injury time, but Churchill held their nerve to win the following kickout, and work in to win a free, which was dispatched by Ivan Parker. The final whistle was blown to see spoils shared – most definitely a fair result as neither team deserved to lose. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-22, Churchill 3-13. It would be impossible for anyone in attendance at this game to have left unhappy as they were treated to a fantastic game of football with outstanding score-taking on both sides. For the home side, Ivan Parker was scorer in chief, scoring 0-9 with three from play. On the Rangers side, Kieran Doona put on an shooting exhibition, scoring 0-7 from play with all of them from 40 yards or more. As Valentia have withdrawn from the competition, Laune Rangers have played all their games in this year’s County League. As all other teams have games to play, the final standings are not yet known, but, at worst, Laune Rangers have secured a playoff place to decide promotion.
