SENIOR: Laune Rangers travelled to Lewis Road to take on Dr. Crokes ‘B’ in Round 8 of the Senior Football League on Sunday 1st July. A hat-trick f goals from Chris Doncel and another from Mark O'Shea gave Dr. Crokes B the victory. Laune Rangers were first off the mark with a point from a free from Colm O’Shea after corner forward Dáire Cleary was fouled in the 2nd minute. This lead was short lived however as two minutes later, in the 4th minute Chris Doncel went in for his and Dr. Crokes first goal of the afternoon and the lead swung in the home-side’s favour, 1-00 to 0-01. The free takers on both sides swapped scores in the 5th and 7th minutes of the game with Colm O’Shea slotting over for the visitors and Brian O’Shea pointing for the home-side, 1-01 to 0-02. Laune Rangers scored two further points in the 15th and 16th minutes of the half – a lovely long range effort from midfielder Shane Daly and another pointed free from Colm O’Shea before Darragh O’Sullivan intercepted a Dr. Crokes kickout to score Laune Rangers first goal in the 16th minute of the half, giving Laune Rangers the lead, 1-04 to 1-01. Dr. Crokes replied in style with a goal from Mark O’Shea straight from the resulting kickout and the lead changed hands once more, 2-01 to 1-04. In the 21st minute of the half, Kieran Doona scored another point for Laune Rangers before Dr. Crokes hit a purple patch, scoring 5 points in as many minutes, the scores coming from Mikey Casey (2), Jack Griffin and Brian O’Shea(2) to let the score 2-06 to 1-05 in Dr. Crokes favour. Two points from Colm O’Shea in the 29th and 32nd minutes closed Dr. Crokes lead to two points but Chris Doncel pounced for his second and Crokes third of the afternoon in the 33rd minute to extend Dr. Crokes lead once more, 3-06 to 1-07. A final fisted effort from Rangers’ Colm O’Shea saw the game stand in Dr. Crokes’ favour at the short whistle. Half Time Score:- Dr Crokes 3-6, Laune Rangers 1-8. Mikey Casey got the opening score of the second half for Dr. Crokes before Darragh O’Connor linked well with Cian O’Shea and Dáire Cleary to send Cleary through for Rangers’ second goal in the 3rd minute of the second half, closing Dr. Crokes lead to two points once more. Dr. Crokes, however, had other ideas and responded well again with Brian O’Shea pointing two frees in the 5th and 7th minutes along with Doncel finding his hat-trick of goals for the afternoon in the 6th minute of the second half to let Dr. Crokes ahead, 4-09 to 2-08. Laune Rangers’ brothers Colm (free) and Cian O’Shea got two points back for the visitors in the minutes that followed to keep Laune Rangers’ hopes alive. Brian O’Shea (Crokes) and James Lynch (Rangers) swapped points in the 13th and 14th minutes of the second half with O’Shea adding another from a free soon after to see Crokes lead 4-11 to 2-11 mid way through the second half. A point from Kieran Doona and a Colm O’Shea free kept Laune Rangers in the game but Dr. Crokes pushed on and hit another purple patch in the final third of the half with points from Mark O’Shea(2), Billy Courtney, Shane Doolan, Brian O’Shea, Mark Hartnett and Jason Lyne to extend Crokes’ lead to 4-18 to 2-13 with 30 minutes of the second half played. A Dáire Cleary effort along with a final point from Patrick Daly for Rangers, in the minutes added on to allow for the water break taken during the half, wasn’t enough to close the lead Dr. Crokes had built up and saw the home side take the points with a final score line of Dr. Crokes 4-18 Laune Rangers 2-15. Laune Rangers: Jason Browne, Pierce Tyther, Sean Arthurs, Cormac Johnston, Chris Riordan, Jonathan Carey, Michael O’Sullivan, Shane Daly, Jack O’Connor, Darragh O’Sullivan, Kieran Doona, Daragh O’Connor, Colm O’Shea, Padraig Murphy, Dáire Cleary. MINOR: After a long sabbatical, the County Minor Championship returned to JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin on Tuesday evening with a rematch of the County Division 1 Final between Laune Rangers & Austin Stacks. Both sides were without players on the day – current Kerry Minor panellist Shane Doona was absent for Rangers while 2017 Minor panellist Dylan Casey missed out for Stacks. There was little to separate the sides for much of the first half. Dáire Cleary and Sean Quilter exchanged pointed frees in the opening minutes, before Dáire Cleary scored the opening goal of the game – Gearóid Hassett putting a great ball into the path of Cleary in the build up. However, Stacks soon equalized with a well worked goal that was finished by Daniel O’Rourke. Wing back Adam Curran ended a fine run upfield for a good point, but Rangers soon regained the lead with a second Dáire Cleary goal. With 15 minutes played, Laune Rangers led by 2-1 to 1-2. Points were again traded between the sides with Cleary pointing a free for Rangers, before an injury to Kevin Fitzpatrick saw the midfielder leave the field. Rangers took some time to adjust to the loss of a key player & Stacks kicked three points in succession in a five minute period – Michael Slattery with the pick of the bunch. Rangers settled into the game again and were back in the lead in the 31st minute as Gearóid Hassett won a ball on the flank and ran in by the touchline before passing across the square to the onrushing Mark O’Connor for a goal. There was sufficient time in the half for two more goals though – Daniel O’Rourke finding the net for Stacks before Dáire Cleary completed his hat-trick to give Rangers the lead at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 4-2, Austin Stacks, 2-6. Michael Slattery & Dáire Cleary (free) traded points early in the second half before Austin Stacks wrestled the lead back with a Michael Slattery goal. Cleary pointed another free soon after to level matters as Rangers were causing havoc in the Stacks backline. Gearóid Hassett scored a fifth Rangers goal to put the hosts ahead again. Dáire Cleary and David Mangan added points but these were soon nullified by Stacks, although Rangers extended their lead with a sixth goal – Dáire Cleary netting for a sixth time to see Laune Rangers leading by 6-6 to 3-9 with a quarter to play. Rangers put in a big defensive display in the final quarter to deny Stacks a goal to get back in the game with Seán Arthurs in particular outstanding in front of his own goal. Stacks scored three frees in the final quarter through Seán Quilter & Michael Slattery, but Rangers were able to match them with three points through David Mangan, Mark O’Connor (free) and Gearóid Hassett (free). Austin Stacks had a player sent off before the end of the game but the final whistle was blown to give Rangers a deserved win in Round 1 of the County Minor Championship. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 6-9, Austin Stacks 3-12. Austin Stacks host Feale Rangers in the second group game next Tuesday evening, before Laune Rangers travel to Mountcoal on Tuesday 10th July to face Feale Rangers in the final game of the group stage.
