SENIOR ‘A’: Our Senior Team faced Tarbert in the County League Division 2 on Sunday last. The home side took control of the game early on. A 2nd minute Shane McSweeney point opened the scoring before John O’Shea found the bottom corner of the net for a goal following a great run from minor wing forward John Tyther. John O’Shea followed it up with a well taken point with his favoured left foot, & Shane McSweeney & Mike Frank Russell (free) had added points, before a great run upfield from full back Johnny Carey found him through on goal but he selflessly passed to Colm O’Shea who tapped into the empty net. Tarbert opened their account with a Gerald O’Sullivan free, but John Tyther cancelled it out with a well taken point to leave Rangers leading 2-5 to 0-1 with a quarter of the game gone. O’Sullivan managed another two frees for Tarbert in the 2nd quarter, but points from John O’Shea, Shane McSweeney & Russell (2, 1f) saw Rangers go for the dressing rooms at the break with a commanding lead. Half time score:- Laune Rangers 2-9, Tarbert 0-3. The home side didn’t allow complacency set in on resumption of play, and scored 8 unanswered points from Padraig Murphy, McSweeney (2), Russell (free), Colm O’Shea (free), John O’Shea (2,1f) & Tyther before Tarbert managed their first score of the second half & indeed their first from play in the game through John Kelliher in the 50th minute. Laune Rangers had now emptied their bench and, after Gerald O’Sullivan (free) and Danny Wrenn pointed for the visitors, Shane McSweeney added his sixth point of the day for the game’s final score. Full time score:- Laune Rangers 2-18, Tarbert 0-6. While Tarbert’s absentees were huge losses & there were a number of wides for both teams, Laune Rangers will be happy with the level of performance put in by all. The captain Johnny Carey was solid at fullback, while the young players John Tyther, Daniel Macbeth, and Shane Daly are all progressing well. Russell showed glimpses of his renowned greatness with a superb first half point & 19 year old John O’Shea’s tally of 1-4 was well deserved, but the outstanding performance was that of Shane McSweeney, who again was at the centre of all things good in the Rangers performance and his tally of 0-6 from play at centre forward was hugely impressive. Team: Jason Browne, Kieran Crowley, Johnny Carey, Keith Sheehan, Chris Riordan, John Sheehan, Aaron Gamble, Shane Daly, Padraig Murphy (0-1), John Tyther (0-2), Shane McSweeney (0-6), Daniel Macbeth, John O’Shea (1-4, 1f), Michael F Russell (0-4, 3f), Colm O’Shea (1-1, 1f). Subs used: David Costello, Shane O’Connor, Michael O’Sullivan, Colin O’Dwyer, Gavin O’Shea.
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW: Laune Rangers have drawn Mid Kerry in the Quarter final of the Quarter Final of the Garvey’s Supervalu County Senior Football Championship. The fixtures have been penciled in for the weekend of October 4th/5th, but could change depending on Kerry’s progress in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship
DEVELOPMENT ‘B’: Our B Team faced Asdee in the County League Division 5 on Saturday evening. Asdee got off to a much brighter start with 1-2 unasnwered in the opening minutes. Gary Flynn registered Rangers first score with a pointed free before Asdee responded with another two points. Rangers finally put some flowing football together though, and following a great run from half back by David Coffey, Gary Flynn blasted into the roof of the net to bring the deficit back to 4 points (Rangers 1-1, Asdee 1-5) after 15 minutes. Gary Flynn added another free for Rangers only 2nd half score, but Asdee were well in control at the break after scoring another 1-3 & went for the dressing rooms with a 2-8 to 1-2 lead over Rangers. Gavin O’Shea opened the second half with a well taken point for the home side, before Asdee pointed twice again. Rangers responded again with points from David Coffey and a fantastic free from 55 metres by midfielder Maurice Foley. Asdee found the net for their third goal of the game, while Maurice Foley hit another long range point – this time from play – for what proved to be Rangers final score. Asdee added 5 points before the end but in all, it was a comfortable win for Asdee. Final Score: Laune Rangers ‘B’ 1-6, Asdee 3-15. Team: Eamon Carey, Stuart Delaney, Ger O’Sullivan, Neil O’Shea, David Coffey (0-1), Lar O’Connor, Pa Sheahan, George Evans, Maurice Foley (0-2), Gavin O’Shea (0-1), Paudie O’Shea, Gary Flynn (1-2), Jerome Houlihan, Andrew O’Reilly, Ethan Diggin. Subs: Jack Smith, Liam Hurley.
LADIES: Laune Rangers hosted Castleisland/Duagh last Friday evening in the Senior Ladies County Championship Semi Final. The visitors were almost at full strength, with the only omission being that of Rachel Cronin who was injured. The defending champions Laune Rangers, however, were missing key players in injured MaryAnn Doherty as well as Kerry duo Sarah Jane Joy & Amy Foley. Desmonds/Duagh were in the driving seat from early on, & opened the scoring with a point after a minute. Desmonds/Duagh were again on the attack minutes later when, after been fouled inside the square, the visitors were awarded a penalty. However, Edel Murphy proved her credentials in goal for Rangers with a superb save from a shot destined for the bottom corner of the net. The 2010 All Star didn’t stop there either, as she pulled off three more magnificent saves before half time, but this only proved to slightly quell the Desmonds/Duagh first half onslaught. Rangers could only manage a response with pointed frees from Sarah Houlihan and Patrice Dennehy, but the score at the break was:- Laune Rangers 0-2, Desmonds 2-12. Rangers regrouped in the dressing room at half time and came out fighting in the second half. Muireann O’Shea & Sarah Houlihan (twice) added frees but the visitors points from Leanne Mangan (2) and Lorraine Scanlon (2, 1f) only restored the gap. The final quarter was more of a formality as game was unfortunately over as a contest, but Rangers managed to finish strongly. Two goals for Patrice Dennehy were well deserved after her never-give-up efforts throughout the game. Desmonds/Duagh bagged their third goal before an immediate reply from Rangers saw a great pass from Cliona Coffey find Bernie Breen who dispatched to the net. Anne Maria O’Donoghue, Bernie Breen and Sarah Houlihan all added points for Rangers but a further 1-3 for the visitors saw them run out 4-19 to 3-8 winners. Without Edel Murphy’s first half performance in goal for Rangers, the score at the break could have been much worse, while Patrice Dennehy’s workmanlike performance throughout was responsible for much of the Launesiders’ 2nd half scores. Laune Rangers: Edel Murphy, Cliodhna Mcsweeney, Amanda Long, Maura O'Sullivan, Norina O'Callaghan, Johanna O'Callaghan, Sarah Clifford, Bernie Breen (1-1), Patrice Dennehy (2-1), Cliona Coffey, Sarah Houlihan (0-4f), Muireann O'Shea (0-1f), Klara O'Sullivan, Anne Maria O'Donoghue (0-1), Meadbh Johnston. Subs: Ciara O’Sullivan, Kathlynn Coffey, Sarah O’Connor, Noreen O’Sullivan, Michelle Costello.
MINORS: Laune Rangers hosted Milltown/Castlemaine last Friday evening. Following a tense opening half, the visitors went into the break in the lead, on a score of 1-7 to 0-7. Rangers were much stronger in the second half though and, with goals from John Tyther, Manus Gallagher, Jack Smith & Gavin Riordan, they deservedly won on a full time score of:- Laune Rangers 4-10, Milltown Castlemaine 2-10. Minor Team: Robert Lynch, Pierce Tyther, Aidan Cox (0-1), George Evans, Jack Smith (1-0), Neil O’Shea, Ciaran Foyle, Daniel Whittleton, John Tyther (1-4), Jamie Clifford (0-2), David Costello (0-2), Manus Gallagher (1-1), Liam Hurley, John C O’Brien, Gavin Riordan (1-0). Sub: Padraig Aherne
UNDER 16 BOYS: Our U16 boys were defeated by Dr Crokes in the County League Division 1 on Wednesday last, on a scoreline of 4-10 to 2-11 in Lewis Road.
UNDER 16 GIRLS: Laune Rangers took on John Mitchels in the Ladies County U16 League Division 3 Semi Final this evening in Cloon. In glorious sunshine, Rangers got off to a great start with a goal from Yvonne Sheahan inside 5 minutes, and followed it up with goals from Cliona Coffey & Lisa Mangan, as well as points from Sarah Clifford, Ciara O’Brien and Fiona Brennan to lead at half time by 3-3 to 0-1. Mitchels started to fight back early in the second half, a solitary Sarah Clifford point for Rangers responding to 2-2 for Mitchels to leave just 4 points between the sides with 15 minutes to go; 3-4 to 2-3. However, Rangers found their groove again and closed out the game with class. Goals from Ciara O’Brien & Yvonne Sheahan as well as points from O’Brien (2), Cliona Coffey (3) and substitute Roisin O’Hara sealed a deserved win. Last week’s All Ireland Under 14 championship winning trio Ciara O’Brien (with a tally of 1-3), Tara Breen & Lucy Clifford (solid at centre and full back respectively) all showed their pedigree, while wing backs Alanna Foley and Sarah Clifford turned defence into attack in an instant with some great dispossession and passing. However the stand out performance was from Cliona Coffey at centre forward, whose reading of the game combined with great handling and distribution meant she either scored or assisted in all of the 2-4 scored in the final quarter of the game. Rangers now move on to the County League Final against Dr Crokes, which may be played next week. Team: Lucy Knight, Ciara O’Sullivan, Lucy Clifford, Alice Joy, Alanna Foley, Tara Breen, Sarah Clifford, Yvonne Sheahan (2-0), Sarah Clifford (0-2), Ciara O’Brien (1-3), Cliona Coffey (1-3) , Megan Gamble, Fiona Brennan (0-1), Lisa Mangan (1-0), Lauren Hurley. Subs: Nicki Clifford, Roisin O’Hara (0-1), Lucy O’Donnell, Kayleigh McGlashen.
