SENIOR: Laune Rangers will ply their trade in Division Three of the County Senior Football League in 2020 following victory over Finuge in a promotion playoff on Sunday afternoon. The game was played in terrible conditions in Ballymacelligott, with an unchanged Rangers side – with eight U20s in the starting team – playing against a strong breeze in the first half. It was the 7th minute before the game’s first score, a great point from long range from Finuge’s Pat Corridan. Rangers took the lead in the 12th minute with a goal – Roan Moriarty reacting quickest to a rebounding ball off the crossbar to catch and finish to the roof of the net. With fifteen minutes played, Rangers led by 1-0 to 0-1. David Mangan scored a super point for Rangers to increase their lead but two Darragh Mackessey frees were pointed to leave the minimum between the sides at the break. This may have been different but for excellent saves by both goalkeepers – Jason Browne stopping a shot by Finuge before their last pointed free and Fiachra Clifford forcing Killian Fitzgerald into a point blank save at the other end. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-1, Finuge 0-3. The game was won by Rangers with a dominant display in the third quarter with the breeze at their backs. Jason Browne pointed a 45 before Kieran Doona made use of the breeze to score an excellent free, following it up with a fantastic point from distance and another free as Rangers pulled away. Fiachra Clifford, Roan Moriarty & David Mangan all scored excellent points to leave Laune Rangers leading by 1-8 to 0-3 with a quarter to play. Possibly with one eye on next week’s Mid Kerry Final, Rangers made a number of changes in the final quarter. John Tyther added his name to the score sheet with another long-range point, but that would be Rangers final score of the game. A pointed free by Pat Corridan ended a 27 minute spell without a score for Finuge before the North Kerry men scored a late consolation goal as Laune Rangers held possession for the final minutes to take the win. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-9, Finuge 1-4. Laune Rangers:- Jason Browne (0-1, 45), David Costelloe, Seán Arthurs, David Mangan (0-2), Cormac Johnston, Shane McSweeney, Patrick Carey, Jack O’Connor, John Tyther (capt, 0-1), Mark O’Connor, Kieran Doona (0-3, 2f), Darragh O’Sullivan, Fiachra Clifford (0-1), Roan Moriarty (1-1), Shane Doona.
