SENIOR ‘A’ TEAM:       Our Senior side began life in Division 2 of the County Senior Football League on Sunday last, with a home tie against Spa.  Scores were exchanged in the early minutes as points from Mike Frank Russell and Kevin Flynn (free) were met with a brace from Michael O’Donoghue (1 play, 1 free) to leave the scores level at 0-2 a piece after 12 minutes.  O’Donoghue had a goal chance saved by Jason Browne but the rebound went over the bar to give Spa the lead before Craig Hickey did find the net to give the visitors a 1-3 to 0-2 lead on the quarter mark.  Shane McSweeney (Rangers) and Brian Russell (Spa) exchanged points before Laune Rangers went on the offensive for the last 5 mins of the half.  Points from Kevin Flynn (2) (1 free), Mike Frank Russell & Pa Joy drew the sides level at the break 0-7 to 1-4.

Rangers started the 2nd half as they ended the 1st, with three unanswered points from Colm O’Shea, Kevin Flynn and Pa Joy.  Spa immediately responded with three points from Michael O’Donoghue to draw the sides level 0-10 to 1-7 after 40 minutes.  Laune Rangers captain and fullback Jonathan Carey was then black carded for a cynical challenge on his opponent, and O’Donoghue pointed the resulting free to give his side the lead.  That lead lasted for all of 3 minutes, before Kevin Flynn pointed a free for Laune Rangers to level it up.  Again points were exchanged between O’Donoghue for Spa and Mc Sweeney for Rangers before some great work from Colm O’Shea got Rangers into an attacking position and he passed off to Pa Joy who found the net & put Laune Rangers ahead 1-12 to 1-9 with a quarter of the game to play.  A Hugh Donoghue point for Spa was cancelled out by a trademark 50m free kick from the ground by evergreen Mike Frank Russell.  Aidan Cahill then scored a fine point for Spa before Colm O’Shea got another for Rangers to leave the score at 1-14 to 1-11 in favour of the home side with 6 minutes to play.  Spa rallied though, and Brian Russell and Michael O’Donoghue points put just one between the teams with a minute to go.  Laune Rangers then committed a foul to give Spa the chance to equalize and with the final kick of the game, O’Donoghue scored his tenth point of the game from 40 yards to tie the game and share the points.

DEVELOPMENT ‘B’ TEAM:      Our Development Team also began their 2014 season on Sunday, with a home tie against Kilgarvan.  On a sunny afternoon in Killorglin, the first half was a very even contest.  The first chance didn’t come until 5 minutes into the game, when Rangers goalkeeper Vinnie Costello pulled off a point blank save from Kilgarvan’s Patrick O’Shea but the ball rolled out for a 45.  That 45 was taken quickly with a short pass to O’Shea who slotted the ball over the bar for the opening point.  Jack O’Connor levelled up matters for Rangers before O’Shea pointed with a free and Timmy Healy doubled the advantage to put Kilgarvan 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 15 minutes.  Jack O’Connor then pointed with a free of his own before he levelled the game with one from play.  Points were exchanged between Conor Shorthall (Kilgarvan) and Eamon Carey (Rangers) to make the score 0-4 each at half time.

The Second half was very much dominated by the visitors.  Patrick O’Shea scored 4 points for Kilgarvan, while Eamon Carey scored two of his own for Rangers to put the score at 0-8 to 0-6 in favour of the visitors with 15 minutes to play.  Kilgarvan then transferred their dominance of the game on to the scoreboard with a goal from substitute Florence O’Sullivan, and Shorthall added a point shortly afterwards.  Jack O’Connor pointed for Rangers to leave them trail

ing 1-9 to 0-7 with 12 minutes to play but O’Shea quickly cancelled it out with another point.  Carey & O’Connor added their 4th and 5th points of the day respectively for Rangers, but the visitors then drove home their dominance with 3 final points -  Patrick O’Shea, Kieran O’Sullivan, and John Mark Foley adding to the tally to make the final score Laune Rangers 0-9, Kilgarvan 1-13.

Their next fixture is an away tie in Renard next Sunday 30th March at 2pm.

MINORS:         Our Minors travelled to Listowel in a rearranged back game in the Co League on Saturday.  In a 14 a side game they unfortunately lost by a point on a scoreline of 4-5 to 2-10.  They conceded four early 1st half goals, but rallied back to compete again.  With scores level & time up, Rangers almost won it at the death before Listowel won back possession and swept downfield to slot the ball over the bar to steal the win with the last kick of the game.

Team & scorers: - R Lynch, N O’Shea (0-2), G Evans, P Tyther, R Prendeville, A Cox(0-2), A O’Sullivan, D Macbeth (1-1), J Tyther (0-1), D Whittleton, D Costello (1-0), M Gallagher, P Daly (0-4), JC O’Brien.

Their next fixture is a home tie against Castleisland Desmonds, on the 4th April.
