SENIOR ‘A’ TEAM: Laune Rangers hosted Castleisland Desmonds in a sunny Killorglin on Saturday evening. Castleisland started much brighter than their hosts and following 3 wides and a point blank save by Rangers goalkeeper Tony Lyons, Cian O’Connor finally put the first mark on the scoreboard with a pointed free after 5 minutes. This was followed by another from play by O’Connor, a Thomas Hickey 45, & points from Kieran Brennan and Maurice Hickey. Shane McSweeney registered Laune Rangers first score of the game on the quarter mark to leave the home side trailing 0-1 to 0-5 after 15 minutes. Desmonds hit another purple patch and scored 3 more points in the next three minutes through Thomas Hickey (free), Kieran Brennan & Gearoid McCarthy before they really confirmed their dominance with a Barry O’Neill goal. Points from Mike Frank Russell (free) & Ryan Keane & one in response from a Thomas Hickey free saw out the half. The score at the break was: Laune Rangers 0-3, Castleisland Desmonds 1-9.
Rangers opened the second half brightly & were able to eat into the substantial lead with points from McSweeney and Russell, but Desmonds struck again with a second goal – Kieran Brennan the man to find the net. Desmonds added insult to injury through points from Cian O’Connor (free) and Barry O’Neill. Now twelve points behind with 20 minutes remaining, Rangers managed to find a level of fluency and scored 5 unanswered points from Russell (free & two 45s), Pa Joy & substitute John O’Shea. They could have reduced the gap even further, only for the heroics of Desmonds goalkeeper Ger Reidy who pulled off 4 saves in the half to stop Rangers finding the net & effectively killed off the Rangers fightback. Points from Maurice & Thomas Hickey were cancelled out by a brace from Shane McSweeney to make the score at the final whistle:- Laune Rangers 0-12, Castleisland Desmonds 2-13.

DEVELOPMENT ‘B’ TEAM Laune Rangers B hosted Sneem/Derrynane in a sunny Killorglin on Sunday afternoon. In perfect footballing conditions, Laune Rangers opened the scoring through Gary Flynn but it was quickly cancelled out by David Breen for the visitors. Ian Galvin put Sneem/Derrynane ahead with a pointed free before Colin O’Dwyer levelled matters with a fine long range point for Rangers. Michael White & David Drummond both got forward from their half back line to get their names on the scoresheet and give Sneem/Derrynane a 0-4 to 0-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Paudie O’Shea pointed for Rangers before points from Ian Galvin (free), David Breen (45) & Mike Hussey stretched the visitor’s lead. The final minutes of the half was a free scoring affair, as Eamon Carey, Paudie O’Shea & Gary Flynn (2 frees) pointed for Laune Rangers while Mike Hussey, Ian Galvin and a goal & brace of points for David Breen saw Sneem/Derrynane have a commanding lead at the break. The Half Time score:- Laune Rangers 0-7, Sneem/Derrynane 1-11.
The visiting team’s sharpshooters picked up where they left off after the break. David Breen and Mike Hussey scored a point each at the start of the half before Colin Dwyer hit the net for a Laune Rangers goal. Two frees for Padraig McGillicuddy left Sneem/Derrynane leading 1-15 to 1-7 with fifteen minutes to go. With any chance of a Laune Rangers comeback diminishing, wing forward Gavin O’Shea managed to get his name on the scoreboard with two quick points. With five minutes to go, the ball was touched on the ground inside the penalty area by a Sneem/Derrynane defender and a penalty was awarded. However, Colin Dwyer fired it over the bar and Rangers had to be content with a point.
