SENIORS: Laune Rangers Seniors hosted Glenbeigh/Glencar in the final Round of the Mid Kerry League on Sunday. The visitors won this game following a dominant first half performance, which included a goal in both the opening and closing minutes – the latter from Darren O’Sullivan who put an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. With Tommy Cahill unerring on free taking duty, Glenbeigh/Glencar went into the break with a 2-6 to 0-3 lead – Pa Joy, John O’Shea (free) & Pa Sheehan with Rangers’ scores. An impressive showing from Glenbeigh/Glencar substitute Daniel Griffin ensured the visitors didn’t let their lead slip in the second half as he scored three well taken points. Pa Joy, Jerry Coffey, and Chris Riordan pointed before David Costello netted for Rangers. Costello added a point to further add some substance to the scoreboard, but Glenbeigh/Glencar had already done enough with points from Darran O’Sullivan & centre back Fergal Griffin having put the game beyond all doubt in the second half. The final score in Killorglin: Laune Rangers 1-7, Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-15. UNDER 14: Our Under-14s continued their preparations for the upcoming County League with a trip to Castleisland on Sunday last. Missing a number of players, Rangers faced a Castleisland team that were considerably bigger than their Killorglin counterparts on the day. The pre-season training sessions over the last few weeks made up for the size difference though, as those regular attendees at training reaped the rewards in terms of fitness particularly towards the end of the match. The game was played over three 20-minute periods with Castleisland starting the stronger, and they had the Laune defence under pressure for much of the period as they took a few early scores. As Laune started to settle the tackle count increased and the full back-line of Stephen O’Sullivan, Cormac Doyle and Rory O’Connor succeeded in turning over possession and moving the ball into attack. Laune picked off a few points from Ronan O’Shea and Matthew Leslie to open their account. In the second period Rangers grew in confidence, and some great passing moves particularly between Barry O’Connor and Gearoid Hassett resulted in well-taken scores. Nathan Houlihan in full-forward created problems for Castleisland and his perseverance contributed to some vital Laune scores. Good work from Martin Faye, Jack Carey, Dean Callan and James Clifford in the forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over, and this meant that Rangers were firmly back in the game by the end of the second period. A couple of great saves from Ronan Fitzpatrick in goals kept the Desmonds tally to the minimum in the period. Castleisland attacked strongly at the start of the last period but Eoin Clifford at Centre-Back was there time and time again to intercept the Castleisland attack, aided by wing backs Peadar Foley and Niall Fenton. Jack Evans came back on after an injury in the first period and kicked a few long range points to keep Laune Rangers in touch. While missing a number of experienced players, this game showed the depth that there is in this panel of players, and also demonstrated the improvements from those that have consistently gone to the training sessions. With two weeks before the first County League match, there is time to build on the positives from the Castleisland match.
