JUNIOR: Laune Rangers were defeated by Spa on Thursday evening in the Barrett Cup Final, which was played at the new Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence in Currans. Spa had the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half and made the most of it, and led by 1-4 to 0-0 after 15 minutes, although Mark O’Connor almost had the ball in the net for Rangers in the first quarter only to see his shot saved. Patrick Daly & Mike Frank Russell (free) got Rangers on the board with points before Rangers saw another goal chance missed as John Sheehan’s shot flashed outside the post. Spa pointed their only point of the second quarter in the 20th minute as they defended on mass – 14 of their team inside their own 45 at times. Laune Rangers produced a third goal chance as Patrick Daly got his fist to a dropping ball at the edge of the square only to see the ball sneak wide of the left post again. Half Time Score:- Spa Killarney 1-5, Laune Rangers 0-2. Laune Rangers got off to a great start to the second half, as Mark O’Connor scored a super point before Patrick Daly struck the net for a well taken goal. After Spa saw a goal chance sail wide at one end, Mike Frank Russell kicked arguably the best point of the game from 45 yards. Eamonn Carey reacted quickly to a dropped-short 45 to slot the ball over the bar and level the game. However, the tide began to turn once more in favour of Spa as the breeze died down. The Killarney side kicked three frees in succession before producing a second goal to double their lead with 15 minutes to play. Spa would point two more points to make sure of the win as Kieran Doona pointed a consolation score for Rangers as Gavin O’Shea struck the crossbar late on. Full Time Score:- Spa Killarney 2-10, Laune Rangers 1-6. Laune Rangers Team:- Padraig Ahern, Seán Arthurs, Mark Healy (capt), Darragh O’Shea, Colm O’Mahony, Michael O’Sullivan, James Lynch, Maurice Foley, John Sheehan, Patrick Daly (1-1), Kieran Doona (0-1), Cian O’Shea, Michael F Russell (0-2), Eamonn Carey (0-1), Mark O’Connor (0-1). UNDER 16 BOYS: Laune Rangers defeated Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane on Sunday afternoon in Round 3 of the Mid Kerry Under 16 Competition. Playing in Cromane, the home side had more of the play in the opening stages, but Rangers led through a Matt Leslie goal in the 7th minute somewhat against the run of play. Leslie added two points (1 free) before GGC scored their first point of the game. Shogie O’Sullivan hit the net to finish a great team move that included great link play from Jack Healy and Rory O’Connor in the build-up. Gearóid Hassett scored a fantastic individual goal a minute later to see Rangers leading by 3-2 to 0-1 with fifteen minutes played. Matt Leslie (free) & Calum Russell both pointed to cancel out points from GGC, but the home side kicked three points in succession to narrow the gap between the teams. Matt Leslie scored the final point of the half to see Rangers leading by nine points at the break. Half Time Score:- Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 0-6, Laune Rangers 3-5. GGC opened the scoring at the start of the second half with a point but Matt Leslie scored his second goal of the game in the 34th minute, as Gearoid Hassett ran 60 yards in possession before passing to Leslie who slotted it to the net. Shogie O’Sullivan pointed twice with well taken scores while Matt Leslie (free) and Gearóid Hassett added further scores to see Rangers lead by 4-9 to 0-7 with a quarter to play. Rangers lost Rory O’Connor to a black card in the final quarter as a penalty was awarded to the home side. However, goalkeeper Jake Reenstierna – introduced as a substitute a few minutes earlier – made a great double save as he stopped both the initial spot kick and the follow up shot. GGC added two points before GGC were awarded another penalty and Reenstierna was black carded. Rangers’ marquee forward Gearóid Hassett stepped in goal for the spot kick. GGC were successful on the second time of asking to reduce the gap between the sides. The hosts would add two further points in the final minutes to add gloss to the scoreline, but Rangers had done enough to win. Full Time Score:- Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 1-12, Laune Rangers 4-9.
