UNDER 14 BOYS: Laune Rangers U14 team travelled to Churchill in the first round of the Central League on Monday July 6th. The team played well with some of the development team members earning the first team jersey and performing admirably on the night. Despite playing into a strong wind Rangers settled quickly and got the scoreboard ticking over early. That being said, Rangers had to rely on Erwin Brennan making a couple of great saves and sound play at full back from Gabriel Griffin to withstand the Churchill challenge. In the second half Rangers added to their lead, with the highlight being a superb point taken by Roan Moriarty. This was overall a good team performance with everybody contributing to an overall win which will serve as a good confidence booster for the remainder of the competition. The Under 14 Boys also took part in Comortas Peil John Egan in Killarney over the past weekend. This weekend saw our Under-14’s compete in the 3rd Annual John Egan tournament. Laune Rangers played host to The Downs GAA from Westmeath. The Downs brought a panel of 26 players that stayed with the families of some of our under-14 panel. The weekend got under way on Thursday evening with a friendly game between the two teams after The Downs arrived in Killorglin. The main competition got underway on Friday morning. Laune Rangers were drawn in Group 4 –played at Spa GAA – along with The Downs, Legion and Sneem. The first match was against our Westmeath guests and this proved to be a fantastic close game of football which ended in a draw. Next up was Legion and after a good start Rangers were one point up at half time. However, 2 early second half goals saw Legion take the lead which they held until the end of the game. The last match of the group against Sneem proved to be a close encounter with Laune Rangers emerging victorious by a point. In the other games The Downs defeated Legion to top the group. Our third place finish saw us qualify for the Division 3 semi-final. This semi-final also played in Spa saw Rangers face neighbours Milltown-Castlemaine. In yet another close match Laune held on for a two point win and a place in the final in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday. The entire panel played an important part in the four matches to earn a place in the final. The final on Saturday saw Laune Rangers face Na Gaeil. Despite going behind by 5 points early on, Rangers settled and some well taken points and goals saw the Rangers take the lead. In the second half the team put together some fine passages of play and this, coupled with excellent finishing, ensured that they emerged victorious with the final score being Laune Rangers 4-11 Na Gaeil 3-3. After losing a few finals this year it was great to play in Fitzgerald Stadium and have such a comprehensive win. Evan Madden, captain for the day collected the trophy on behalf of the team. Special thanks extended to the Egan family for their continued support in this great tournament. Huge thanks are also due to the families that hosted The Downs team for the two nights. There is no rest for the Under-14s in what is an extremely busy season, with both teams in action in the Central District league on Monday night.
