INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Laune Rangers will take their place in the Quarter Finals of the Intermediate Championship following defeat of also qualified Desmonds on Saturday evening in Castleisland. Two early points by John Tyther and Gearóid Hassett got Laune Rangers off to an excellent start, with Tyther adding a pointed free in the sixth minute. A fantastic pointed 45 by David Mangan was followed by a Fiachra Clifford point to leave Rangers leading by 0-5 to 0-0. However, Desmonds managed to get on the board before the water break with points from Graham O’Connor & Danny Hickey to leave the home side trailing by 0-5 to 0-2 with fifteen minutes played. Fiachra Clifford added two well taken points before he and Cian W O’Connor traded frees to leave Rangers leading by 5, while Barry Lynch & Jack O’Connor also exchanged points before the break. Half Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 0-4, Laune Rangers 0-9. Desmonds found themselves down to 14 men in the early minutes of the second half, as Denis O’Connor was black carded and sent to the sin bin for ten minutes. This galvanised the home side though, and they soon found the net. Evan Madden was adjudged to have fouled Patrick Hickey in the square as a ball was dropping in and a penalty was awarded. The initial penalty shot was saved excellently by Jason Browne but the rebound fell at the feet of penalty taker Graham O’Connor who tapped the ball to the net. Gearóid Hassett responded with a fisted point for Rangers but – after Barry Lynch had scored an excellent long range point – Desmonds scored a second goal to take the lead. Luka Brosnan completed a long run with a shot, which took a deflection that caught Jason Browne flat-footed. Adam O’Donoghue added a point to leave Desmonds leading by 2-5 to 0-10 at the water break with fifteen minutes to play. Desmonds’ Ryan Maguire was lucky to receive just a yellow card for a cynical foul on Gearóid Hassett as the young forward – while still 40 yards out – had only grass between him and the goal. After four consecutive wides, Laune Rangers regained the lead in the 52nd minute with a super goal. Dáire Cleary dispossessed a Desmonds attacker to knock the ball to David Mangan, who began and finished the move with the ball travelling through Mark O’Connor and Fiachra Clifford in the lead up. Laune Rangers controlled the remainder of the game, as they cut through Desmonds time and again, which left the hosts committing foul after foul. Three pointed frees by John Tyther were intersected by a solitary point by Adam O’Donoghue, while Fiachra Clifford tapped over a free in the dying seconds – Stephen Bartlett having pulled off a super save during an advantage – to give the visitors a four point win. Among the four substitutes introduced by Rangers in the second half was Stephen Sealy, who took the field for his Championship debut. Full Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 2-7, Laune Rangers 1-14. Best for Castleisland on the evening were Brian Leonard, Luka Brosnan and Barry Lynch, although a great all round team performance gave Laune Rangers a much deserved win. Mark O’Connor put in his usual energetic display, while Fiachra Clifford led the forward line with great effect. David Mangan was outstanding on the night, his goal a just reward for his efforts. A special mention also goes to Kieran Crowley, who returned from an injury-enforced retirement two and a half years ago. He quickly shook off the 868 day old cobwebs to put in a super display. UNDER 14 BOYS: Spectators were treated to a fantastic football game on Wednesday evening, as Austin Stacks visited JP O’Sullivan Park in the County Under 14 League with the Laune Rangers Blue side coming out on top. Scores were level at 0-3 a piece after 10 minutes, as early Stacks points were met by scores by Niall O’Brien & Conor Buckley (2 frees). Rangers then hit their stride, and scored four points in succession through Darragh Clifford, Seanie Diggin, Ryan Carey & Conor Buckley (free), as Darragh Clifford was proving too hot to handle at full forward. Stacks, with the wind at their backs, pointed four in succession themselves to level matters before they took the lead with a goal. However, Rangers replied almost immediately with a goal of their own – Stephen Gannon with an excellent finish following great play by Darragh Clifford. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-7, Austin Stacks 1-7. A lovely Adam O’Neill point was sandwiched between two pointed frees by Stacks in the opening five minutes of the second half, before the visitors added two further points to take a 3 point lead. However, Rangers came alive again, and were ahead by the 45th minute, as Conor Buckley pointed a free – from a foul inside the square with no penalties awarded at this age grade – before Rangers scored their second goal with another excellent finish by Stephen Gannon. Rangers were now in full flow, and the forward division were forcing fouls time and again, with Conor Buckley scoring four consecutive frees to bring his tally to 0-8 from placed ball – one of these from another foul inside the square as Charlie O’Sullivan was brought to the ground as he was about to tap into the net. Adam O’Neill pointed again before Andrew Owens added a brace, with the substitutes really putting their stamp on the game. The final score of the game was a fabulous point, as Darragh Clifford pointed from out wide on the right – a score that sparked a standing ovation from the lucky few in attendance. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers Blue 2-17, Austin Stacks 1-12. Laune Rangers Blue:- Patryk Radny, Seán O’Donnell, Shane Clifford, David O’Brien, Gavin Mangan, Charlie O’Sullivan, Matthew Spillane, Eoin O’Connell, Niall T O’Brien (0-1), Logan Foley, Conor Buckley (0-8f), Sean Diggin (0-1), Stephen Gannon (2-0), Darragh Clifford (0-2), Ryan Carey (0-1). Subs used: Andrew Owens (0-2), Adam O’Neill (0-2), Aaron Doyle, Evan Moriarty. Laune Rangers White team completed the double in the age grade on Thursday evening, with defeat of Keel/Listry in JP O’Sullivan Park. At the first half water break, Laune Rangers led by 1-5 to 1-1 with goalscorer Adam O’Neill excelling at full forward & the Rangers forwards all in scoring form. By Half Time, Rangers had doubled their advantage as Aaron Doyle, Cathal Moroney (free), Patrick O’Donnell, Patryk Radny (2) and Adam O’Neill (free) all adding to their tallies to give Rangers an eight point lead at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-11, Keel/Listry 1-3. Andrew Owens, Oran O’Sullivan, Patryk Radny and Adam O’Neill all pointed for Rangers with Keel/Listry scoring three at the other end to leave Rangers ahead by 10 at the second half water break. Keel/Listry rallied late on, scoring two more goals and, were it not for the heroics of Adam Radny in goals, would have added a couple more. However, with Patryk Radny (3, 1 free) & Adam O’Neill (3, 1 free) pointing at the other end, Rangers did enough to record a deserved win. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-21 White, Keel/Listry 3-6.
