SENIOR: The County Senior Football Leagues got underway this weekend, as Laune Rangers began life in Division Four with a home tie against Renard. Kerry Senior & U20 squad members Peter Crowley, Fiachra Clifford and Dáire Cleary were released to play for their club in Round 1 to strengthen Rangers cause, although Jonathan Carey was unavailable to the home side who had eight U21s in the starting team on the day. Renard, on the other hand, were without Killian Young and Rob Wharton through injury. In difficult conditions, Laune Rangers got the only two scores of the first quarter – goalkeeper Jason Browne scoring a super 45 & Patrick Carey also pointing an excellent point from play. Patrick Daly added a well taken pointed free. Rangers were now dominating the possession but were unable to convert that to scores, mainly due to the excellent Renard defence who blocked down Rangers shots time and again. This kept the visitors in the game, and a pointed free by Dara Fitzgerald saw the sides separated by just two points at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-3, Renard 0-1. Jim Sugrue scored an excellent point to leave the minimum between the sides until the 42nd minute, when Dáire Cleary finished a great solo run by hitting the net for Rangers. Cleary hit the net for a second time in the 47th minute, as a Shane McSweeney pass found David Costelloe who forced a great save from Pa McGill only for the rebound to fall to the feet of Cleary for an easy finish. With just under a quarter of the game to play, Laune Rangers led by 2-3 to 0-2. Renard – with the swirling wind now blowing more in their favour – didn’t let their heads drop and began to chip away at the Rangers lead with a pointed free by Dara Fitzgerald. Kevin Curran was first to reach a dropping ball to knock it past Jason Browne for a Renard goal to leave three between the sides, but David Costelloe added a much needed point for Rangers at the other end. Dara Fitzgerald pointed twice late on for the visitors to leave Rangers sweating but some great defence by the home side – by Pierce Tyther & Conor Murphy in particular – saw the game out. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-4, Renard 1-5. While the wind & rain meant it was no spectacle in terms of free-flowing attacking football, it was important to get two League points on the board in Round 1. For the visitors, Kevin Curran and Dara Fitzgerald produced valuable scores while Brian Sugrue led well from full back. For Rangers, Tyther brothers John and Pierce put in big shifts at midfield and corner back respectively, while Pierce’s comrade at the back Conor Murphy was also excellent. At the opposite end, Dáire Cleary was dangerous throughout and his two goals were crucial.
