Former Laune Rangers, Mid Kerry & Austin Stacks player Paul Lucey passed away on Friday, December 22nd.

Paul Lucey was the youngest member of one of our greatest and most storied sporting families. His brothers all excelled in sport - Brendan (RIP) was an outstanding athlete, while Jimmy (RIP), Vincent (RIP) and Noel all played for Laune Rangers before Paul, and all three played Senior football for Kerry (all starting together in 1963), with Jimmy and Noel winning Celtic Crosses in 1962.

Having served with the Irish Army, Paul Lucey returned to the fold with Laune Rangers and Mid Kerry for 1965, and went on to win Mid Kerry Senior Championships in 1966, ’67, ’69, ’70 & ’73. He won the County Senior Football Championship with Mid Kerry, playing at corner back in 1967.

Paul captained the Kerry Junior team to win the Munster Championship in 1968.

Paul captained the Laune Rangers Senior team in 1969, and was a key member of the team on its return to the County SFC for the 5 years between 1970-1974. As well as playing on the team, Paul was the team's trainer for the three year period from 1972-74. He also served in various roles within the club, including as head of the field committee as JP O’Sullivan Park continued its development.

Having settled to make his life in Tralee, Paul transferred from Laune Rangers to Austin Stacks in time for the 1975 season. The transfer proved to be a hugely fruitful one for the ‘Rockies’, who immediately won back to back County Senior Football Championships in 1975 and 1976 with Paul a key member of the team that went on to win the All Ireland Senior Club title in March 1977.

Paul picked up his 4th County SFC medal in 1979 & made his final Championship appearance for Austin Stacks in 1981.

As he had done with his native club beforehand, Paul got involved in all aspects of the Austin Stacks club. He served as manager of the Senior Team, leading the team to a County Senior title in 1994. He also served as selector to a number of Stacks Senior teams, including Stephen Stack’s management team that led Stacks to their most recent County title in 2014.

In 2017, Paul Lucey managed Austin Stacks Ladies to the County Intermediate title, incidentally accounting for Laune Rangers in the opening round of the competition.

Laune Rangers extend our deepest sympathies to Paul Lucey's family, friends and club mates at Austin Stacks.

Paul Lucey’s remains were removed this Tuesday evening to St John's Church, Tralee. Requiem Mass takes place tomorrow, Wednesday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Milltown Cemetery.
