Laune Rangers 2-9, Shannon Rangers 4-8
The weather was far from ideal at the beginning of this County U21 Championship first Round tie in Killorglin, as a torrential downpour in the hour before throw in made playing conditions difficult from the outset. Shannon Rangers adapted best though and got the opening score through a PJ Connelly point in the opening minute. John O’Shea levelled matters shortly afterwards but it was Shannon Rangers who raised their game considerably over the next few minutes to give them a commanding lead. Two goals from Padraig Boyle and one from Ger O’Sullivan, as well as another PJ Connelly point saw the North Kerry side lead by 3-2 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Points for Laune Rangers by John Tyther & John O’Shea were cancelled out by Ger O’Sullivan & Kevin Bowler for the visitors, the latter deflecting over the crossbar from a great save by Gary Naughton in the Killorglin goal. Laune Rangers found their form in the second quarter though, and a David Costello goal followed by points from Eoghan O’Sullivan, Costello & John O’Shea brought Laune Rangers back into the game before the break. The Half Time score was: Laune Rangers 1-6, Shannon Rangers 3-4.
The Shannonsiders begin the second half in a similar fashion to the first & following points from Padraig Boyle & Ger O’Sullivan (free), Boyle completed his hat-trick with a goal to restore the convincing led they had enjoyed early in the game. John Tyther & Gavin O’Shea added points for Rangers to leave them trailing 4-6 to 2-7 with a quarter remaining. Ger O’Sullivan pointed another free for the visitors while Aaron Gamble & Westley Delaney pointed for Laune Rangers, but the final point of the game came from substitute Jeremiah Tydings to make the final score in Killorglin: Laune Rangers 2-9, Shannon Rangers 4-8.
Michael O’Sullivan & David Costello never stopped trying for the home side, while Shane Daly caught two balls from sailing over the bar in the first half, which envoked memories of former Kerry great Dara O’Sé’s exploits in times past. Kevin Bowler was always a danger going forward from wing back for the North Kerry side, while Ger O’Sullivan kicked his frees and took his goal well. However, the Man of the match was easily full forward Padraig Boyle. The Ballyduff man’s individual tally of 3-1 proves that his sporting talent doesn’t stop with a camán & sliotar.
