County League Division One
Laune Rangers: 2-06
Kerins O’Rahillys: 2-12
A whirlwind start by a hugely determined Kerins O’Rahillys left Laune Rangers with too high a mountain to climb and a valuable brace of county league points returned to Strand Road from JP O’Sullivan Park last Saturday night. With Micheal Quirke dominating the middle throughout, lively corner forward Kieran O’Mahony blasted to the net straight away and repeated the trick before a quarter of an hour had passed. Declan Quill deftly slotted over three points and Brian Moran, who was outstanding all through at centre back, slotted over a ’45. That left it 2-4 to 0-0 and 23 minutes had elapsed before Shane McSweeney, their best performer, pointed Laune Rangers’ first score. A series of astute switches, including the introduction of an energetic Jack O’Connor, helped them to stabilise and just before the break a great run by McSweeney and offload to Shane O’Connor saw the Rahilly’s net bulge. 2-4 to 1-1 at half-time.
Two more points from Declan Quill and another from John Ferguson widened the gap on the restart but Laune Rangers were much improved now and started to claw it back. Pa Joy pointed and Mike Frank Russell expertly despatched a penalty after McSweeney was hauled down with the goal at his mercy. Shane O’Connor added a point to make it 2-7 to 2-3, but Rahillys lifted another gear and four points on the trot, O’Connor, Quill, Ferguson, and O’Mahony, put them back in control. Mike Frank and Pa Joy trimmed it but Laune Rangers couldn’t break Micheal Quirke’s stranglehold on midfield or a very tight, hardworking Tralee defence. Before the end, substitutes Liam Quirke and Ronan Quill swapped scores.
