County League – Laune Rangers vs Dr. Crokes – J.P O’Sullivan Park – Sunday 16th Sept.
Laune Rangers: 0-09
Dr. Crokes: 0-13
Laune Rangers entertained their Killarney counterparts, Dr. Crokes on Sunday last in Round 10 of the Credit Union Senior County League.
A win for the East Kerry side would see them rise to the top of the table alongside Dingle/Daingean Uí Chúis, who were beaten by Milltown/Castlemaine on Saturday evening. While Laune Rangers’ Division 1 status is safe, a win would have given the team a great boost ahead of their County Championship encounter with Rathmore.
It was to be Crokes, who were without Eoin Brosnan for the afternoon, who took the points at the final whistle but it can’t be said that Laune Rangers, playing without Mike Frank Russell, didn’t give everything they could in an attempt to cause an upset.
Dr. Crokes got off to a blistering start with points from Chris Brady (free), Jamie Doolan, and two Colm Cooper efforts (frees) giving the visitors a 0-04 to 0-00 advantage with 10 minutes on the clock.
Laune Rangers came to life at this point and opened their account through a Tom McGillycuddy point. Dr. Crokes Gavin O’Shea cancelled this soon after getting his name on the scoresheet for the visitors.
Killorglin’s sharp-shooter on the day, Jack O’Connor was on hand in the 16th minute to slot over his first of the afternoon. O’Connor followed this with two further points, 1 from a free, to close Dr. Crokes lead to the minimum.
Dr. Crokes answered with a point from full forward, Chris Brady, to give them a two point cushion with 4 minutes of the first half to play. Laune Rangers had two chances to close the visitors lead once more in the closing minutes of the half but were unable to convert same. Half-time score: Laune Rangers 0-04 to 0-06 Dr. Crokes.
It was the home side that got off to the better start in the second half with wing back, Chris Riordan, cutting through the Dr. Crokes defence and sending a swirling ball high and over the bar. Shane McSweeney followed for Rangers to level the game at 0-06 each with just two minutes of the second half played.
Dr. Crokes answered with points from Chris Brady (2 -1 free), Jamie Doolan, and Colm Cooper to extend their lead to 0-10 to 0-06 mid-way through the second half.
Jack O’Connor and Johnny Buckley swapped points in the minutes that followed and the home side trailed by 4 going into the final 10 minutes of the half.
Again O’Connor was on hand in the 24th minute to extend his personal tally for the afternoon before Dr. Crokes answered through a long distance Brendan Falvey effort in the 26th minute.
In the final action of the game Crokes went in for their final point before fittingly, Jack O’Connor scored the last point of the afternoon to leave the game 0-13 to 0-09 in Dr. Crokes favour, with Jack O’Connor putting in a man-of-the-match performance, contributing 0-06 of Laune Rangers total.
