Laune Rangers ‘B’: 1-05
Laune Rangers ‘B’ hosted Valentia in the opening round of the Credit Union County League on Saturday last in the J.P. O’Sullivan Park.
Laune Rangers were looking to improve on last year’s lack lustre season while Valentia were hoping to get the new year off to a good start by claiming the two points.
It was to be the visitors who would take the points on this occasion with an opening round win of 3-13 to 1-05.
Garry Flynn opened the scoring for the home side with a point inside the opening minute. Valentia replied through the boot of Stevie O’Connor with three minutes on the clock to level the game at 0-01 a piece. Valentia took the lead in the 5th minute when midfield Brendan O’Sullivan, who dominated the game through-out, ran through the Laune Rangers defence and found the back of the net to let the score 1-01 to 0-01.
Laune Rangers replied soon after through a John O’Shea free to let two points separating the sides with 6 minutes of the opening half played.
Valentia went on to dominate the scoring in the minutes that followed with Brendan O’Sullivan pointing in the 10 minute. O’Sullivan won the resulting kick-out and found Paul O’Connor inside in the forward line. O’Connor passed off to Junior Murphy who netted Valentia’s second of the afternoon. Further points from Paul O’Connor, Paul O’Sullivan and Brendan O’Sullivan saw the South Kerry side hold a commanding lead of 2-06 to 0-02 with 5 minutes of the opening half remaining.
In the final action of the first half Laune Rangers closed Valentia’s lead some what when Eamonn Carey goaled for the home side. Timmy Walsh intercepted a Valentia pass and sent the ball goal bound. The resulting shot was fumbled by the Valentia goalkeeper Richard Quigley and Rangers’ Eamonn Carey was on hand to slot the ball into the Valentia goal to let the score 2-06 to 1-02 in Valentia’s favour at the short whistle.
Laune Rangers started the quicker in the second half and made good use of the wind with Garry Flynn (free) and John O’Shea pointing inside the opening 4 minutes, 2-06 to 1-04. Valentia responded through the reliable Brendan O’Sullivan before Paul O’Connor went through the Laune Rangers defence for Valentia’s third goal of the afternoon to let the game 3-07 to 1-04 in Valentia’s favour.
Another Garry Flynn free in the 14th minute of the second half was cancelled out by a Stevie O’Connor effort soon after and it was 3-08 to 1-05 in Valentia’s faviour with 10 minutes remaining.
