Laune Rangers hosted Milltown/Castlemaine in Round 3 of the Mid-Kerry Junior League on Tuesday evening.
Laune Rangers held their position on the top of the League with a 2-09 to 1-09 win over their neighbours. Goals from Paul McKenna and Ian Costelloe at crucial points in the game assisted Rangers’ win.
Seamus Dowd opened the scoring for the visitors with a point in the 3rd minute. Laune Rangers responded through Trevor West who showed well for the home side throughout the game.
Laune Rangers first goal came in the 8th minute of the opening half when Shane ‘Box’ O’Connor ran through the Milltown/Castlemaine defence. O’Connor passed to Paul McKenna who slotted the ball passed Milltown/Castlemaine ‘keeper Kevin Tangney; 1-01 to 0-01.
Shane O’Connor showed his accuracy in the minutes that followed with three pointed frees, the pick of these being a long range effort from close to the side-line to let Laune Rangers 1-04 to 0-01 to the good.
Trevor West and Paul McKenna swapped points with Kieran McKenna (2) to let the score 1-06 to 0-03 in Laune Rangers favour at the short whistle.
Milltown/Castlemaine had a much better second half with corner forward Ciaran Griffin opening the second half scoring.
The sides swapped points in the minutes that followed before Milltown/Castlemaine went through for their goal in the 9th minute of the half.
Jack McCarthy linked well with Ciaran Griffin who sent a lovely ball across the Laune Rangers square. Milltown/Castlemaine’s Seamus Down was waiting and sent the ball into the back of the Laune Rangers net cutting Rangers’ lead to two points, 1-07 to 1-05.
Laune Rangers responded in style with substitute Ian Costelloe firing off an absolute bullet from out around 35 yards that made it’s way passed all defenders and into the net.
Kieran McKenna and Shane O’Connor swapped points in the 18th and 22nd minutes to let the game 2-09 to 1-06 in the home side’s favour.
Three final points from Jack McCarthy was a case of too little, too late for the visitors as referee Mike Moriarty blew the full time whistle soon after. Full-time score: Laune Rangers 2-09 to 1-09 Milltown/Castlemaine.
