Laune Rangers take
spoils over Scartaglin in County League
Home side produce
solid display to come away with seven point win.
Laune Rangers hosted Scartaglin on Saturday afternoon last in glorious sunshine in the J.P. O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin. A win for the home-side would give them the chance to reach the League final depending on the result of the back game between Castleisland Desmonds and Southern Gaels. It was indeed Laune Rangers who would take the league points with a 2-12 to 1-08 victory over Scartaglin. Scartaglin will no doubt rue their two missed penalty opportunities. Had they been converted it would have completely changed the direction of the game.
Laune Rangers got the dream start with a goal from the throw in. Alana Foley found the net in style for the game's opening score in the first minute. The side's swapped points in the 2nd and 5th minutes of the opening half with Mary Herlihy pointing for the visitors and Patrice Dennehy splitting the posts for the home side. Scartaglin went through for the game's second and their first goal in the 6th minute of the half. Eileen O'Connor made her way through the Laune Rangers defence before finding the back of the Laune Rangers net to level the game at 1-01 a piece.
Two Patrice Dennehy frees for the Launesiders saw them edge slightly in front with 9 minutes of the opening half played, 1-03 to 1-01. In the 13th minute Scartaglin's Mary Herlihy took a 45 yard kick kicking it short to her team mate Amy Reidy. Reidy played it back to Herlihy who sent the ball over the bar for a lovely, well taken point narrowing the deficit to 1 point once more. Laune Rangers' stalwarts Patrice Dennehy and Anna Maria O'Donoghue extended their lead in the 14th and 15th minutes of the half with two well taken points of their own.
Siobhan Collins and Eileen O'Connor replied for Scartaglin but saw their points cancelled out by points from Patrice Dennehy and Megan Gamble for the home side. The score stood at 1-07 to 1-04 with 18 minutes of the first half played. Scartaglin were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute when one of their attackers was pulled down in the box. Mary Herlihy stepped up to take the kick but sent her shot wide. A goal here for Scartaglin would have seen the game level and would really have shaken things up for the second half. Patrice Dennehy extended her personal tally in the 21st minute before Scartaglin's sharp shooter Mary Herlihy added another soon after. A final point for the visitors saw Laune Rangers hold a narrow lead at the short whistle; 1-08 to 1-06.
The second half was a rather lack lustre affair with both sides notching up a number of wides throughout. Scartaglin got the half's opening score with a point from Amy Reidy in the 3th minute. The visitors were awarded their second penalty of the afternoon in the 8th minute of the second half when the a Laune Rangers defender was deemed to have made a leg block by referee Mike Hickey. Mary Herlihy again stepped forward to take the resulting kick. Herlihy was again denied this time by a save from the Laune Rangers goalkeeper Cliona Coffey. Laune Rangers went on to score 4 points, the pick of these from Sinéad O'Connor and Mary Ann Doherty, to let the score 1-12 to 1-07 in the home side's favour with 22 minutes of the second half played. Scartaglin went through for their final point before Anna Maria O'Donoghue closed out the game with a goal. Full time score: Laune Rangers 2-12 Scartaglin 1-08.
