Rathmore defeat under-strength Laune Rangers in County League

Killorglin side await first win.

Rathmore 0-12, Laune Rangers 0-7

Laune Rangers travelled to the Eastern extremities of the County on Friday evening, as they were hosted by Rathmore in the County League Division Two. Peter Crowley was available to the Killorglin side for some much needed game time, however his fellow Kerry teammates Paul Murphy & Aidan O’Mahony were not able to tog out for Rathmore. Aside from this, Laune Rangers were missing some key players with Tommy O’Callaghan, Pa Joy & Shane Daly unavailable to play, Mike Frank Russell injured and Maurice Foley taking no risks in playing on his last evening as a bachelor.

Rathmore looked the sharper side from very early in the game, as they were 0-4 to 0-0 ahead inside five minutes with Michael O’Riordan free, Brian Moynihan, John Moynihan and Cathal Murphy – current Kerry U21 and brother of All Star Paul Murphy – pointing for the home side. The remainder of the opening period was an evenly balanced & sometimes heated affair though, and the home side went into the break with a three point lead, with midfielder Brendan O’Keeffe scoring two superb points for Rathmore while John Sheehan, John O’Shea (free) & Shane McSweeney pointed for Rangers. The Half Time Score:- Rathmore 0-6, Laune Rangers 0-3.
Rathmore opened the second half with a points through centre back Daniel O’Sullivan & Cathal Murphy to open up a 5 point lead. A John O’Shea free was quickly cancelled out by Rathmore’s Michael O’Riordan to maintain the lead with a quarter to play. O’Riordan and Brendan O’Keeffe stretched the home side’s out to 0-11 to 0-4 to close out the game as a contest, as final points by Rathmore substitute Dean Fitzgerald & Laune Rangers John O’Shea (two frees) and John Tyther made the final score:- Rathmore 0-12, Laune Rangers 0-7.

The lack of artillery in the forward line gave Laune Rangers a lot to do in this game, while Peter Crowley’s lack of recent match practice also kept him from showing his true talents. Shane McSweeney was always dangerous for Rangers when he came out the field, and Kieran Crowley, John Sheehan & goalkeeper Tony Lyons were solid at the back. However Rathmore were the better side throughout. Michael O’Riordan was the focal point of the attack and really came into his own in the second half, while five time All Ireland winner Tom O’Sullivan rolled back the years with a fine performance in the full back line. It was Brendan O’Keeffe at midfield that was the standout player in this game though. He linked defence and attack with ease and took each of his three points superbly. Rathmore now top the table at the beginning of this Round 4 weekend, while Laune Rangers remain at the lower end of the table and still await their first win of the season. The next fixtures for each side will be in the County Senior Football Championship. Rathmore play Kerins O’Rahillys in Tralee on Saturday May 23rd, while Laune Rangers will host West Kerry on Sunday May 24th.
