Rangers defeated at home by Templenoe

Calculators at the ready for the final Round.

Laune Rangers 1-13, Templenoe 1-19

Division Two leaders Templenoe travelled north to Killorglin on Saturday evening to face Laune Rangers at JP O’Sullivan Park in the County League. The visitors were spurred on by a large number of travelling supporters and points from Gavin Crowley and Teddy Doyle gave them the lead after five minutes. Two successful frees by ageless Mike Frank Russell were met with more impressive scores from play by Killian Spillane (2) and Brian Crowley to give Templenoe a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 15 minutes , although Rangers had caused some threat near the posts with no reward. Laune Rangers found some momentum midway through the first half though, and two further frees by Russell were followed by a well taken Shane O’Connor point to put the minimum between the sides. A long pass into the square by Templenoe’s Shane Cremin was missed by everyone and bounced over the crossbar for a freak point. Russell pointed another free for Rangers but Templenoe closed out the half in style, and two more fantastic Killian Spillane points were followed by a Teddy Doyle free to give the visitors the impetus at the break. The score at half time:- Laune Rangers 0-6, Templenoe 0-10.

Midfielder Sean Sheehan pointed twice in the early stages of the second half to give his side a double-score advantage, and this would prove to be insurmountable for the home side. Yet another Russell free gave Rangers their first score of the half in the 42nd minute but Killian Spillane added a brace to put Templenoe 0-14 to 0-7 ahead with a quarter remaining. A speculative Daniel Macbeth effort for Rangers struck the crossbar when a goal would have given the home side a route back into the tie but, after Killian Spillane & Russell traded frees & Russell added one from play, midfielder Adrian Spillane marauded forward and finished the ball to the roof of the net for a well taken goal to effectively seal victory for his side. Teddy Doyle and Adrian Spillane added points for Templenoe while Shane Mc Sweeney (2) and Russell (free) pointed for Rangers, before John O’Shea found the net for the home side when a long ball to the edge of the square was fisted home by the substitute. Templenoe finished the game in style with points from Adrian Spillane and Teddy Doyle. Full time score:- Laune Rangers 1-13, Templenoe 1-19.

An early knock for Peter Crowley hampered his performance for Rangers, while Kieran Crowley, Maurice Foley, and Mike Frank Russell (who scored 9 points – 8 frees) stood out for the home side. The travelling Templenoe support strongly outnumbered the home fans and their journey proved worthwhile as their team produced a cavalier performance. Gavin Crowley and the Spillane brothers Adrian & Killian were outstanding for the visitors – the latter’s 7 point haul included four scintillating efforts from play.

Templenoe edge closer to promotion to the top tier in the County League, but Laune Rangers will now rely on a number of results to go their way in order to survive in Division Two.

  1. Laune Rangers will stay up if they defeat Tarbert, Currow lose to Spa, and Gneeveguilla lose their two final games against St Marys and Templenoe.
  2. If Laune Rangers draw against Tarbert and Currow lose to Spa and/or Gneeveguilla lose their two final games against St Marys and Templenoe, then Rangers will enter a relegation playoff (with two or more teams on 6 points).
  3. If Laune Rangers defeat Tarbert and Currow draw with Spa and/or Gneeveguilla lose one and draw one (ie pick up one point) from their two final games against St Marys and Templenoe, then Rangers will enter a relegation playoff (with two or more teams on 7 points).
