The summer finally arrived on Sunday last, and Laune Rangers hosted Currow in the glorious sunshine at JP O’Sullivan Park in Round 5 of the County League Division Two. Currow were effectively at full strength, while Laune Rangers were without John Sheehan & Peter Crowley – the latter, like all of his Kerry teammates, not allowed play a week before their Munster Championship opener in Tipperary.
The first score of the second half was an equalizer for the away side, as Seamus Scanlon scored from long range to bring his side level. This would only last two minutes however, as Pa Joy scored his fourth point of the afternoon to put Rangers ahead once again – a lead that they would not relinquish. Chris Riordan (Rangers) and Mike McCarthy (Currow) traded points before Maurice Foley pointed for the Killorglin side to put two points between the teams. The first dismissal of the afternoon came in the 42nd minute, as substitute Ronan Sayers – on the field for 7 minutes – was given a black card for an off the ball challenge. Dan O’Shea kicked his third point of the day (all from long range) & with 15 minutes to play, Laune Rangers led by 0-9 to 0-8.
Mike Frank Russell restored the two point lead with a free from 40 yards before Rangers received their second black card in the 48th minute – a late challenge by Maurice Foley deemed excessive, and he was shown the line. Currow again reduced the deficit to the minimum with a Mike Hanafin point, but this was cancelled out by another Mike Frank Russell free. With five minutes to play, Rangers led by 0-11 to 0-9. Seamus Scanlon became the third person to be dismissed as his mistimed challenge saw his closed fist find the side of John Tyther’s head with force and he received a straight red card. Tyther attempted to play on but was taken off with concussion & brought for medical attention. There was time for a fourth dismissal of the day, as Pa Sheehan – himself a black card replacement – hauled down his marker and was given a black card. Rangers had their full quota of substitutions used at this stage, so were reduced to 14 men but they held on to win by two points. Full Time: Laune Rangers 0-11, Currow 0-9.
The 1 red, 3 black and 2 yellow cards would suggest that this was a dirty game but it was far from that, and the game provided entertainment to all with some great scores kicked by both sides. John Daly and Mike Hanafin played well at the back for Currow, while their centre forward Dan O’Shea kicked three super points from distance. Michael O’Sullivan and Johnny Carey held firm at the back for Rangers, while Maurice Foley and Mike Frank Russell excelled going forward. It was the performance of Pa Joy that stood out though, as the corner forward scored 4 points from play – one of them striking the crossbar before going over.
Laune Rangers now move on to 3 points in the league and move out of the relegation zone, and they play away at Glenflesk on Saturday next at 7:30pm. Currow are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points won yet, and will host Gneeveguilla next Saturday at 7:30pm.
