Listowel beat Laune Rangers in Killorglin in County League
North Kerry side take the County League points
The overnight rain subsided in Killorglin on Sunday, as Listowel Emmets made the journey to face Laune Rangers in County League Division Two. There was nothing to separate the sides in the opening half as the each side had periods of dominance. Shane McSweeney and John O’Shea were firing for the home side while Conor Cox, David Sheehy and Rici Hanley pointed for Emmets as the sides went in at the break with scores tied. Half Time: Laune Rangers 0-5, Listowel Emmets 0-5.
Laune Rangers began the second half with an immediate goalscoring opportunity, but Shane McSweeney’s shot was stopped by a fantastic Keith Hughes save. To compound this, Conor Cox immediately added a free for Listowel at the other end & shortly afterwards slotted a 45 to put his side two points up – a five point swing in the space of three minutes. Listowel further stretched their lead on the 46th minute when a penalty was awarded for them as Conor Cox was adjudged to be fouled inside the square, and the offending party Keith Sheehan was given a black card for his efforts. Cox dispatched the penalty himself to give the visitors a 1-7 to 0-5 lead with a quarter remaining. Rangers responded well though and found the net themselves to reduce the deficit back to two – Shane McSweeney’s shot stopped by Listowel goalkeeper Hughes, but the netminder was adjudged to have been behind the goal line. Following prolonged discussion with umpires, the goal stood. A John O’Shea point for Rangers was sandwiched between two Emmets points courtesy of Jake Moriarty & a Conor Cox 45 to leave 3 points between the sides with 4 minutes to play. There was plenty time for more drama, as Pa Joy was hauled down inside the square for another penalty. John O’Shea stepped up and placed it into the top corner to tie the scores as time expired. However, Listowel weren’t prepared to settle for a point, and a point by Rici Hanley was followed up by a David Sheehy goal in injury time to take the spoils for the visitors. Full time score: Laune Rangers 2-6, Listowel Emmets 2-10.
John O’Shea’s place kicks kept Rangers in touch throughout this game & finished with a tally of 1-4, while Shane Daly fielded some great ball at midfield. The visitors were deserved winners though, & the linkup play between veteran Noel Kennelly outfield and Conor Cox at full forward caused constant problems for the home side, and Cox’s performance earned him 1-5.
