Kenmare defeat Laune Rangers in stormy affair

Home side best handles weather conditions to claim all important League points.

High Winds and driving rain were the chief ingredients of this Division Two clash in south Kerry on Saturday evening. Both sides were missing their intercounty players in Stephen O’Brien & Peter Crowley, while the visiting Laune Rangers side also was also without the captain Shane McSweeney. Laune Rangers had the aid of a strong breeze & got off a good start and scored two points in the opening two minutes through Colm O’Shea – one free and the other from play. Kenmare found their rhythm soon though, and scored four unanswered points as Paul O’Connor was orchestrating affairs with a brace, while Kevin O’Sullivan & Fionan O’Sullivan added the others. Another Colm O’Shea free was cancelled out by O’Connor for Kenmare to ensure the home side led after 15 minutes; Kenmare 0-5, Laune Rangers 0-3. However, Paul O’Connor was unplayable in the 2nd quarter. Points from Kieran Crowley & Shane O’Connor for Rangers were sandwiched by a hat-trick of points by the former Kerry forward & the sides went in at half time with the score at Kenmare 0-8, Laune Rangers 0-5.

The wind picked up during the break, and Laune Rangers faced an uphill task as they also had to deal with the sheets of rain that were driving into their faces for the second half. Paul O’Connor pointed for the home side in the opening minute of the half, & Rangers problems were compounded when Fionan O’Sullivan found the net for the home side a minute later to give his side a seven point lead. The visitors introduced John O’Shea from the bench & he added impetus to his side with three unanswered points while Tony Lyons twice kept Kenmare at bay with saves to leave the score at 1-9 to 0-8 in favour of Kenmare with 10 minutes to go. Substitute David Costello put a goal scoring opportunity into the hands of the Kenmare goalkeeper, as Rangers’ momentum waned & Kenmare pushed on in the closing minutes and scored three final points through Paul O’Connor (2) and Kevin O’Sullivan to make the score Kenmare 1-12, Laune Rangers 0-8 as referee Eddie Walsh blew the final whistle on this rain-soaked encounter to give Kenmare the win.

The conditions did not encourage open, expansive football but there were some stand out performances. Veteran Pa Sheehan drove Laune Rangers on throughout the game, but Paul O’Connor was the difference maker on the day with a 9 point haul between placed ball and scores from play.
