Beaufort 2-11, Laune Rangers 2-21

Laune Rangers began their defence of the Mid Kerry Under 21 Championship title on Saturday afternoon with the trip to Beaufort in the preliminary round of the 2020 competition.

The home side led early on, as points from Jack Sweeney (2, 1 free) & Ciarán Kennedy were met by a sole Shane Doona point to put the hosts 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 5 minutes. Dáire Cleary and Ronan O’Shea levelled matters with points for Rangers, before Ciarán Kennedy knocked the ball to the net from close range to put his side ahead. Laune Rangers began to take control of the game from here though, and points by cousins Eoin & Fiachra Clifford left the minimum between the sides at 0-5 to 1-3 with a quarter played.

The sides were level when Dáire Cleary pointed after beating his markers and completing a fine run, while Fiachra put Rangers ahead for the first time soon afterwards. Gearóid Hassett & Jack Hallissey traded points before Laune Rangers took over at the end of the first half. Points by Dáire Cleary and Shane Doona had the visitors three ahead before that lead was doubled when Gearóid hit the net from close range. Further points by Shane Doona and Fiachra Clifford saw Rangers leading by eight at the break. Half Time Score:- Beaufort 1-4, Laune Rangers 1-12.

Beaufort began the second half brightly, with Ciarán Kennedy scoring three points (2 frees) with Dáire Cleary pointing a free at the other end in the same period to leave the hosts trailing by six after 35 minutes. Dáire Cleary & Jack O’Connor exchanged frees before a great cheer welcomed Kevin Fitzpatrick back for a first appearance on the field of play since a cruciate ligament injury in July 2018. Jack Sweeney (free) and Ronan O’Shea traded points once again before further Rangers scores were added by Fiachra Clifford (free), Patrick Carey and Gearóid Hassett to leave Rangers ahead by 1-18 to 1-9 with fifteen minutes to play.

Dáire Cleary and Fiachra Clifford increased Rangers’ lead with points before Beaufort scored their second goal through substitute Shane O’Sullivan Rouse who finished well to the bottom corner. Gabriel Griffin – introduced himself a few minutes earlier – got his name on the scoresheet before Jack O’Connor pointed a free for Beaufort. If the win wasn’t secured beforehand, Dáire Cleary’s 58th minute goal certainly ended any chance of an unlikely comeback. Jonathan Kissane scored the final point of the game to leave ten points between the sides at the end. Full Time Score:- Beaufort 2-11, Laune Rangers 2-21.

Laune Rangers progress to the Semi Final of the competition, where they will host Keel/Listry next Saturday, February 8th at 2pm.
