Laune Rangers 2-13, Keel 1-6

Laune Rangers Seniors picked up their first win of the season at home to Keel on Sunday afternoon. Played for the most part in wet & windy conditions in JP O’Sullivan Park, Laune Rangers took the field with four sets of brothers in their starting fifteen. Careys Johnny & Pa, Tythers John & Pierce, O’Sheas Colm & Cian and O’Connors Jack & Mark all started, with the latter making his full debut at corner forward.

Laune Ranger took the lead after just 30 seconds with a pointed free by Colm O’Shea. Colm O’Shea and Shane McSweeney added points before some great link up play with Mark O’Connor sent David Costelloe through on goal, and the forward finished his run well by slotting the ball to the net. Another Shane McSweeney point left Rangers ahead by 1-4 to 0-0 with just five minutes played.

Keel composed themselves though, and they capitalized on a lapse in concentration by the Rangers defence to put Terry O’Sullivan through on goal – the veteran forward making no mistake in smashing the ball to the top corner from close range. Keel points from Aaron Murphy & Gary Sayers were cancelled out by super scores by Shane McSweeney & Cian O’Shea respectively to leave Laune Rangers ahead by 1-6 to 1-2 with a quarter played.

The second quarter was less frantic as Laune Rangers were defensively astute & punished Keel’s fouls by scoring three frees though the O’Shea brothers Cian & Colm (2) before the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-9, Keel 1-2.

Mark O’Connor scored the first point of the second half and it was a deserved score for his efforts, having won a number of frees in the first half. Keel were reduced to 14 men in the 38th minute as goalkeeper Cillian Sayers was shown a red card for a striking offence, and Rangers took full advantage, scoring a pointed free through David Costelloe before Shane McSweeney finished a move that he started himself with a well taken goal having linked up with substitute Patrick Daly. Oisin Daly was also introduced in the second half making them the 5th set of brothers to line out together on the day for the home side. With 15 minutes to play, Laune Rangers led by 2-11 to 1-2.

Cian O’Shea added two frees for Rangers in the last quarter while Keel scored four more points through Gary Sayers (3, 2 frees) & Martin Burke, while Rangers also finished with 14 as Daragh O’Connor received his marching orders in the final stages. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-13, Keel 1-6.
