Rangers & Pats draw in County League

Late comeback by Rangers almost steals the win but Pats rescue a point

Laune Rangers 1-10, St Patricks Blennerville 0-13

Points were shared in JP O’Sullivan Park on Sunday afternoon, as Laune Rangers came back from five behind to earn a draw with St Pats of Blennerville. Laune Rangers continue to be affected by injuries, with Jack O’Connor joining the growing list of side-lined players and Rangers lined out with 7 players aged 20 or younger in the starting team. St Pats were pretty much at full strength on the day, although they travelled to Killorglin with only 19 players.

Scores were at a premium in the early stages, as the sides hit two points each in the first 10 minutes – Colm O’Shea (free) and an excellent Dáire Cleary point for Rangers with Liam O’Sullivan and Willie Hurley pointing for the visitors. Pats then almost raised a green flag as Gary Savage forced a great save from Jason Browne, but he reacted well to the rebound and got enough on it to put it over the bar. Brendan Poff and Breandáin Savage both added further points for Pats to leave the visitors leading by 0-5 to 0-2 with 15 minutes played.

A pointed free by Colm O’Shea was soon cancelled out by a point from Willie Hurley, as Laune Rangers came close to scoring a goal – Pierce Tyther ghosting up the field from corner back and getting through on goal only to see his shot go just wide of the left post. Fiachra Clifford pointed a free for Rangers, but St Pats added points from Gary Savage & David O’Callaghan to extend their lead. Rangers created another goal chance late on in the half, but Cian O’Shea’s shot was saved well by Paudi Bailey who deflected the ball over the bar. Colm O’Shea pointed another free to see Rangers heading in at the break trailing by two points. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-6, St Pats 0-8.

St Pats dominated the third quarter, outscoring Rangers by 0-4 to 0-1 to increase their lead to five points – Willie Hurley (3 frees) & David O’Callaghan for Pats & Cian O’Shea for Rangers to see the Blennerville men in the lead by 0-12 to 0-7 with 15 minutes to play.

Laune Rangers upped their game for the final quarter, as they showed great tenacity and perseverance to stage a great fightback. It began as Jason Browne split the posts with a great 45, while substitute John O’Shea pointed well shortly afterwards. A super Shane Daly point reduced the gap to two points before Dáire Cleary scored an excellent goal to give Rangers the lead – the Minor player turning his marker at the dressing room corner of the pitch, carrying the ball in along the line and finishing to the net.

Credit to St Pats, they reacted in the best possible way and worked the ball downfield to level the game up within 90 seconds as Brendan Poff pointed. There would be no further score and the final whistle was blown to see the spoils shared. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-10, St Pats 0-13.
