County Senior Football League Division Three Round 11:- Finuge vs Laune Rangers. 19/8/18

Laune Rangers drop to County League Division 4

Nine points insufficient to keep the Laune afloat

Finuge 1-6, Laune Rangers 2-16

It was a disappointing day for Laune Rangers on Sunday afternoon, as results elsewhere meant that a convincing win away to Finuge was not enough to save the club from relegation to Division 4 of the County Football League. Ironically, Rangers were closer to full strength than they had been all year as an injury ravaged campaign saw the men from the Laune without up to 16 players at stages of the season.

The game itself on Sunday wasn’t much of a contest as a weakened Finuge outfit – missing many of their panel due to hurling commitments – were outclassed from the outset. David Costelloe found the net in the early stages and added three points in an impressive showing while Colm O’Shea pointed twice more to leave Rangers leading by 1-5 to 0-0 with a quarter played.

By the time Finuge scored their first point in the 18th minute, Rangers had added three more through Pa Daly, Fiachra Clifford and Colm O’Shea, while Kieran Doona and Dáire Cleary added points soon after to see all starting forwards on the scoresheet in the first half. Finuge got a goal of their own before the break with a penalty. Half Time Score:- Finuge 1-1, Laune Rangers 1-10.

Colm O’Shea pointed a free at the beginning of the second half before Dáire Cleary scored Rangers’ second goal. Finuge pointed two well taken scores to leave Rangers leading 2-11 to 1-3 with a quarter to play.

Rangers added five more points before the end of the game through replacements John Tyther, Padraig Murphy, Cian O’Shea, Jack O’Connor and Daragh O’Connor while Finuge added three more of their own. Final Score:- Finuge 1-6, Laune Rangers 2-16.

Ultimately, it is a bitter disappointment to see the club step down to the fourth tier of County League. On another year, Rangers’ final tally of 9 points in the League would see them safe, but the results on the final day saw six teams separated by just two points with Rangers losing out in the end.

However, with a huge depth of talent coming through the ranks of an underage system as well as a number of players to return from injury before next year, there will be brighter days in future.

It’s always darkest before the dawn.
