Laune Rangers 1-12, Waterville 0-4

Laune Rangers claimed a crucial pair of League points with defeat of Waterville in the penultimate round of the County Senior Football League at JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin on Sunday afternoon. The sides had met early in the season in the Championship – the South Kerry side coming out on top on that occasion – but both sides were without half a dozen players who played that evening in Caherciveen.

In a low scoring first quarter, Rangers missed the opportunity of a dream start, as Waterville goalkeeper Patrick O’Dwyer pulled of a fantastic double save, first from Fiachra Clifford and then David Costelloe. However, Rangers held the momentum and led by 0-3 to 0-0 with fifteen minutes played – a Fiachra Clifford free sandwiched between excellent points from O’Shea brothers Cian and Colm.

Fiachra Clifford added another free for Rangers before Waterville registered their first score with a Keith Moran pointed free. Rangers were still on the ascendancy and would add two more points before the break through Colm O’Shea (free) and Jack O’Connor, but Waterville scored the final point of the half through Barry O’Dwyer (free). Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-6, Waterville 0-2.

Rangers began the second half as they had the done in the first, with a gilt-edged goal chance that saw Colm O’Shea hit the post and David Costelloe see the rebounding effort saved by Pa O’Dwyer in the Waterville goal. Waterville’s Shay Flaherty was shown a black card in opening minutes of the second half for a foul on Pa Daly, & Colm O’Shea pointed the resulting free for Rangers. Laune Rangers finally struck the net in the 37th minute, as a great move up the right flank saw David Costelloe win a high ball and ultimately get the ball to Jack O’Connor who finished excellently to the net. Jamie O’Sullivan added a point for the visitors – their first of the half – before Fiachra Clifford & Colm O’Shea pointed frees to leave the home side in a commanding lead with a quarter to play. With 15 minutes remaining, Laune Rangers led Waterville by 1-9 to 0-3.

A Kieran Doona point for Rangers was cancelled out by a Paddy Curran point for Waterville, but it would prove to be the visitors’ final score of the game. Fiachra Clifford punched the ball over the bar before kicking another free to close the game out. Final Score:- Laune Rangers 1-12, Waterville 0-4.

Although not contributing on the scoreboard on the day, David Costelloe put in another impressive showing as he regains his match fitness following a three month layoff through injury. Fiachra Clifford’s return to the team was a welcome boost also. Rangers’ defensive unit were outstanding on the day, holding the visitors to just two points from play. This defence included four Under 20s in Pierce Tyther, Darragh O’Shea, Sean Arthurs and Conor Murphy (the latter two still Minors) and they performed very well. The assured presence of Cormac Johnston at full back aided the younger players, but it was the performance from centre back of captain Johnny Carey that stood out on the day.
