2nd defeat for Rangers in Intermediate Championship

Away defeat against Castleisland Desmonds puts Rangers in relegation playoff

Castleisland Desmonds 1-16, Laune Rangers 1-8

Laune Rangers are facing into a Championship relegation playoff following a second defeat in Group 3 of the Intermediate Championship against Desmonds in Castleisland on Sunday afternoon. Desmonds had their pitch in pristine condition for the day’s game, but the loss of Peter Crowley to injury was a big blow for Rangers, as John Tyther returned to the starting team in his place.  David Costelloe remained sidelined following the injury he sustained against Ballydonoghue a fortnight ago, while the elbow injury to Kieran Crowley in the same game may have ended his season.

Laune Rangers actually took the lead from a well taken Shane Mangan point in the first minute, but Desmonds scored five unanswered points in the next 10 minutes through Adam Donoghue, Danny Hickey (2 frees), Thomas Hickey (free) and Cian O’Connor. A 13th minute Daragh O’Connor point for Rangers stopped the one-way run on the scoreboard, but the hosts continued to dominate and added another five in a row through Danny Hickey (3, 1 free), Tomás Lynch & Kieran Brennan. Rangers almost struck the net late in the half, as a good move out of midfield saw Fiachra Clifford feed Dáire Cleary who unselfishly passed the ball across the square, but the ball was just out of reach of the onrushing Jack O’Connor who could only get a toe on it to put it wide. Colm O’Shea did manage to put a free over the bar from the 45 metre line before the short whistle to leave Rangers trailing by 7 at the break. Half Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 0-10, Laune Rangers 0-3.

The home side got off to the best possible start to the second half, as veteran full forward Kieran Brennan – a first half replacement for Thomas Hickey – got on the end of a high ball at the edge of the square to find the net. Desmonds goalkeeper Stephen Bartlett came upfield to score a 45 and, after Fiachra Clifford & Luka Brosnan had traded points, Rangers ‘keeper Jason Browne kicked a 45’ of his own. Colm O’Shea pointed a nice score from a difficult angle for Rangers, before Jason Browne dived to make an acrobatic save from a Cian O’Connor shot that seemed destined for the top corner. The resulting 45’ was again scored by home goalkeeper Bartlett but John Tyther clawed another point back for the visitors from a well taken effort to leave Desmonds leading by 1-13 to 0-7 with a quarter to play, as Laune Rangers introduced Darragh O’Sullivan for his Senior debut.

Colm O’Shea and Danny Hickey exchanged frees before Cian O’Connor pointed a free of his own, but Laune Rangers spirits were lifted somewhat by a terrific solo goal by Patrick Carey – the young wing back with an excellent run up the left flank ending with a delightful finish into the top right corner of the net. Cathal Doyle was shown a black card to see his day end and was replaced by Chris Riordan, and a Tomás Lynch point with effectively the last kick of the game saw the home side come away with a fully deserved victory with Rangers creating a couple of late goal chances wth Luck not falling on their side. Full Time Score:- Castleisland Desmonds 1-16, Laune Rangers 1-8.

Results elsewhere – and the ‘head to head’ tie-breaker – leaves Laune Rangers now certain to finish bottom of Group Three and will go into a 4 team relegation playoff. Glenflesk – now guaranteed a path to the Semi Finals – travel to Killorglin in Round Three while Waterville host Desmonds.
