Laune Rangers defeated in Semi Final

Beaufort 0-15, Laune Rangers 0-7

A huge ovation by the home crowd greeted the final whistle on Sunday as defending champions Beaufort booked their place in the Mid Kerry Senior Final, as they picked up their first championship win over Laune Rangers since 1979.

Beaufort got off to a flying start, scoring unanswered points through Liam Carey (3), Mike Breen (2) and Nathan Breen to lead by six points to nil after 10 minutes. Rangers had simply not performed in the opening ten minutes, and the damage done by Beaufort’s attack proved crucial to the rest of the game. Mike Frank Russell made up for an earlier missed free by tapping over Rangers’ opener, but this was cancelled out by a Fergal Hallissey free to leave Beaufort leading by 0-7 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

The second quarter was a balanced affair as Laune Rangers were unable to eat into the deficit. Mike Frank Russell (2 frees) and Fiachra Clifford points were all nullified by Beaufort through Darragh Coffey, Niall O’Connor and Liam Carey. Mike Moriarty also pulled off an excellent save from Connor Clarke to stop Rangers from halving the gap between the sides. Half Time score:- Beaufort 0-10, Laune Rangers 0-4.

Darragh Coffey and Fiachra Clifford (free) traded points early in the second half before the hosts hit another purple patch, with Fergal Hallissey (free), James O’Reilly, Darragh Coffey and Ciarán Kennedy all pointing, while Rangers added a solitary point through John Tyther to trail by 0-15 to 0-6 with a quarter to play.

Beaufort didn’t score during the final quarter, but they had one goal chance which was cut out by Tony Lyons. However, the home side had more than enough done as Laune Rangers missed a number of chances to claw themselves back into the game. The final whistle was blown to see Beaufort progress to the Mid Kerry Final, where they will meet Glenbeigh/Glencar in the decider. Full Time Score:- Beaufort 0-15, Laune Rangers 0-7.

Beaufort’s first championship win over Rangers for 38 years sees them on course to defend their Mid Kerry title. Meanwhile, the period without a Michael O’Connor Cup for Rangers extends to eleven years – the longest the club has gone without the title since the inception of the Mid Kerry Board.
