Killorglin Derby won by Rangers

Laune Rangers 1-15, Cromane 1-4

The Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship got underway on Saturday afternoon as Laune Rangers hosted Cromane in a Killorglin parish derby in JP O’Sullivan Park.

Cromane got off to the ideal start, as a long diagonal ball from the right flank by Niall Dennehy went all the way to the net, beating Sean O’Sullivan and Rangers goalkeeper Tony Lyons on the way. Points for Rangers by John Tyther and Maurice Foley were each cancelled out by Darren Houlihan – first with a free and then with a 45. Mike Frank Russell had a goal chance that flew over the crossbar before scoring a great point from distance, and a fine Laune Rangers move ended with Shane McSweeney popping the ball over the bar to level the scores at 0-5 to 1-2 with 20 minutes played.

Having missed a number of chances throughout the half, Laune Rangers took the lead for the first time through a John Sheehan point in the 23rd minute but it was cancelled out by a Paul Patrick O’Sullivan free. However, Rangers regained the lead before the break as Mike Frank Russell pointed. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-7, Cromane 1-3.

Darren Houlihan tied the game up once more with a pointed free 4 minutes into the second half. However, they would not score for the remainder of the game as the Rangers engine started to purr. Points from Colm O’Shea (3, 2 frees) and Patrick Carey gave the home side the lead by 0-10 to 1-4 with 15 minutes to play. Peter Crowley scored an excellent point with his left boot from 45 metres while converted frees were added by Colm O’Shea and Mike Frank Russell to increase the hosts’ lead to six points.

Rangers dominance was asserted even further when an excellent move by Rangers through John Sheehan and then Jack O’Connor gave Connor Clarke a chance in front of goal, and the Down man made no mistake – hammering the ball to the net past Cromane ‘keeper Paudie McCarthy in the 54th minute.

A full complement of substitutes were introduced in the final quarter for Rangers, while Cromane made four changes which left the final stages a little disjointed. Mike Frank added his 5th point of the game before his withdrawal, and the final whistle was blown to give Rangers double-digit win in the end. Final Score:- Laune Rangers 1-15, Cromane 1-4.

The early goal for Cromane gave the visitors a big boost in the early stages, but that would be their only score from play in the game. In contrast, Rangers scored 1-11 from play with nine different scorers. A far from perfect performance in the first half saw Rangers squeak into the lead just before the break, but outscored Cromane by 1-8 to 0-1 in the second half to book a Semi Final berth.

Laune Rangers will travel to Beaufort on Sunday, October 15th for the Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi Final.
