Promotion hopes end in Mountcoal

St Senans 0-11, Laune Rangers 1-7

Laune Rangers will remain in Division Three of the County Senior Football League for 2018, as a defeat to St Senans in Mountcoal on Friday evening meant that their slim hopes of promotion were extinguished. Rangers were without a number of the regular starting team, as Shane McSweeney, John Sheehan, Connor Clarke, & Aidan Cox were all absent through injury – the latter suffering a serious knee injury in the recent County U21 Final that has ended his season. Meanwhile, Mike Frank Russell had to settle for a place on the bench as he was unable to shake off a slight injury. The game did mark the return to action of club captain Maurice Foley who made his first competitive appearance of 2017.

St Senans started well and, following a scoreless opening 4 minutes where they forced a save from Tony Lyons in the Rangers goal, they took a three point lead over the visitors with well taken scores by Jason Browne, Paudie Dillon & Sean O’Connell. Rangers responded well with points from Colm O’Shea (long range free) and an excellent John Tyther score, but a Sean O’Connell free for the hosts put St Senans ahead by 0-4 to 0-2 after 15 minutes in blustery conditions.

Laune Rangers were level by the 18th minute, as Colm O’Shea notched two frees following fouls on David Costelloe. Sean O’Connell gave the hosts the lead again with a free, but two more Colm O’Shea frees put Laune Rangers ahead heading in at the break. Half Time Score:- St Senans 0-6, Laune Rangers 0-7.

Paudie Quille levelled the game early in the second half, before pointed frees were traded between Colm O’Shea and Sean O’Connell to leave the sides level with a quarter to play at 0-8 apiece.

Paudie Quille gave Senans the lead in the 46th minute with a point, before the hosts were presented with a gilt-edged chance with a penalty. However, Sean O’Connell had to settle for a point as his shot blazed over the bar. O’Connell added a free soon after though to leave the home side ahead by three, as Kieran Crowley received a black card for Rangers (Mike Frank Russell coming on in his place). However, Laune Rangers substitute Cian O’Shea – making his second Senior appearance – took a pass from fellow Minor player Patrick Carey and hit the net with a cool finish to tie the game up again at 1-7 to 0-10.

The home side had another chance to take all the spoils before the game finished when they were awarded a free in injury time to take the lead. The successfull kick by Sean O’Connell left Rangers seeking a winner and, as a draw was of no use to either party, Rangers turned down the opportunity for an equalizer in seek of a goal. The goal was not to come and St Senans held on to give their own survival hopes a massive boost. Full Time Score:- St Senans 0-11, Laune Rangers 1-7.

Laune Rangers now can not catch Dromid Pearses in the final promotion place, meaning that the South Kerry side join Ballymacelligott and Na Gaeil in promotion to Division Two.
