Rangers win on the road in County League

Ballymacelligott 0-12, Laune Rangers 3-9

Laune Rangers picked up an important away win against Ballymacelligott on Saturday evening – their third County League win on the road this season. Laune Rangers had to do without Peter Crowley on the eve of the Munster Final, but were able to call upon Kieran Crowley & Michael O’Sullivan who had both been injured since April.

Laune Rangers had a breeze at their backs in the first half & started brightly and, after a couple of wides by the visitors, Mike Frank Russell kicked an excellent point from distance to open the scoring. Some excellent one-on-one defending became a recurring theme in the early stages, with some great block-downs from Kieran Crowley and Mikey O’Sullivan catching the eye in particular. Connor Clarke added the second point of the game from long range for Rangers in the 10th minute before they suffered a setback as Shane McSweeney had to withdraw after picking up an injury – Shane Daly coming on in his place.. Aidan Breen opened Ballymac’s account with a point before it was cancelled out by Jack O’Connor to see Laune Rangers lead by 0-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

Laune Rangers almost hit the net in the 17th minute, but Jack O’Connor’s shot whistled past the post and Ballymac responded with a point from Paudie McCarthy to halve the deficit. A Connor Clarke point was quickly met by an Aidan Breen point for the hosts, before Paudie McCarthy and David Costelloe traded points soon after – the latter score coming from a great break up the left flank by Mikey O’Sullivan. Vinny Horan nailed an excellent 45 into the breeze to for Ballymac to level matters, but Laune Rangers had the final say in the half and scored points from Colm O’Shea (free) and John Tyther to take a lead into the break – Kieran Crowley’s surging run from the back causing havoc in the lead up to Tyther’s point. Half Time Score:- Ballymacelligott 0-5, Laune Rangers 0-7.

Laune Rangers had the ideal start to the second half, as they scored two goals inside the opening 5 minutes of the half. Colm O’Shea had pointed a free at the beginning of the half, before a great move on the right flank ended with Ballymac ‘keeper Paudie Laide get a hand to Patrick Carey’s shot at goal, but Connor Clarke was there to get a palm to the ball and encourage it across the line. No more than 90 seconds later, a carbon copy goal came for Rangers, as some pinball action in the small rectangle finished with John Sheehan tapping in from close range – a well deserved goal for the veteran’s huge efforts at midfield. Ballymac had the better of the action in the third quarter after the goals had gone in though, and scored points from Paudie McCarthy (2), Cian Counihan and Gene Griffin to stay within reach. They could’ve reduced the gap further, but for the efforts of Tony Lyons who stopped Gene Griffin’s shot from point blank range. With 15 minutes remaining, Laune Rangers led by 2-8 to 0-9.

Colm O’Shea added another pointed free for Rangers, but Vinny Horan followed up a well taken point from play with another well hit 45. The final minutes were almost exclusively played in the Laune Rangers half as the visitors struggled to get into the middle third, although their play at the back – while nail-biting for their supporters – was calm and assured. Laune Rangers held out, and scored a third goal as time expired. Much like the previous goals, a tap in by Colm O’Shea was sufficient after John O’Shea’s fisted effort came back off the bar. Eanna Reidy pointed for the hosts before the final whistle. Full Time Score:- Ballymacelligott 0-12, Laune Rangers 3-9.

Laune Rangers pick up an important two points in the County League and in doing so, subject Ballymac to their first loss of the season in the competition. Vinny Horan and Paudie McCarthy stood out for the hosts with some great points, while Aidan Breen and Cian Counihan played well also. The return of Kieran Crowley and Mikey O’Sullivan for Rangers was timely. The uber-experience of John Sheehan and Mike Frank Russell was crucial when needed most, while John Tyther seemed to cover every blade of grass.

Round 8 of the County League takes place on the weekend of 15th/16th July, with Laune Rangers hosting Fossa.
