Rangers pick up win on the road in Brosna

Vital League points earned away from home

 Brosna 0-8, Laune Rangers 1-16

Laune Rangers made the trip to Brosna on Saturday evening in Division Three of the County Senior Football League & came away successful, inflicting the first defeat of the League campaign on their hosts. Among the absentees for Rangers were Crowleys Peter (Kerry Seniors) and Kieran (injured), while Eamon Kiely’s call up to the Kerry Juniors saw him miss out for the hosts.

Laune Rangers had the aid of a strong wind in the first half and made full use of it, scoring six unanswered points in the opening ten minutes. Aidan Cox opened the scoring before Colm O’Shea pointed a free from 40 metres for Rangers. The visitors had an excellent goal chance after 5 minutes, but John Tyther saw a great effort at the top corner slip just by the right post – the ball causing the net behind the goal to ripple so much that many in the stand thought it had gone into the goal. Connor Clarke, Patrick Carey, David Costelloe & Mike Frank Russell all pointed excellently from play to increase Rangers’ lead to six. Tom McGoldrick pointed a free for Brosna to open their account, but Russell, John Sheehan & John Tyther pointed Rangers ahead further to complete a great opening quarter for the visitors. With 17 minutes played, Laune Rangers led Brosna by 0-9 to 0-1.

The wind was proving difficult for both sides to judge in the second quarter, with the defences gaining the upper hand. Tom McGoldrick pointed two great frees against the wind but Mike Frank Russell split the posts with a 45 to see Rangers take a seven point lead into the break, with Rangers having kept the home side scoreless from play in the first 30 minutes. Half Time Score:- Brosna 0-3, Laune Rangers 0-10.

Many onlookers wondered if seven points was enough of a lead to take in to the second half, but it was Rangers that struck first on the resumption as Connor Clarke pointed from a difficult angle. Brosna scored their first point from play in the 32nd minute through Kieran O’Donnell, and followed it up with another from Tom McGoldrick soon after as Rangers struggled a little to clear their lines. Patrick Carey notched what was the point of the game next for Rangers, as he chased down a Shane McSweeney shot that had been caught in the wind before running in along the end line and clipping the ball over the bar. This point was soon cancelled out by Patrick Moriarty for Brosna, but a Laune Rangers goal in the 41st minute took the wind out of the host’s sails – David Costelloe keeping his composure to beat Stephen McAuliffe in the Brosna goal after some great play by his teammates including Shane McSweeney with a great run and Mike Frank Russell. Colm O’Shea struck an excellent free against the wind from a difficult angle before Shane McSweeney finished another good run by punching the ball over the bar to see Rangers lead by 1-14 to 0-6 with a quarter to play.

Colm O’Shea kicked another free from a similar position to his previous one, before Mike Frank Russell was put through by a great pass by Connor Clarke to kick his fourth point of the game – a score that would prove to be Rangers’ last of the evening as Patrick Carey had a shot at goal saved. Kieran O’Donnell and Patrick Moriarty added to their individual tallies to reduce the gap between the sides, but the result was long decided before the final whistle. Full Time Score:- Brosna 0-8, Laune Rangers 1-16.

Brosna missed their key man Eamon Kiely on the evening & could not contain Rangers at stages. Tom McGoldrick and Kieran O’Donnell stood out for the hosts. However, Rangers’ dominant third quarter was the winning of the game as, not alone did they hold the lead they had built with the wind, they increased it further due to some great scoring matched by great defending. Mike Frank Russell rolled back the years and led by example, with some excellent points scored in the first half in particular.

Laune Rangers host Na Gaeil next Saturday in Round 6 of the County League, while Brosna travel to St Michael’s/Foilmore.
