Rangers B held to a draw in Junior League

Laune Rangers 2-13, Dromid Pearses 3-10

The sides couldn’t be separated in Round Two of the County Junior League on Friday night, as Dromid came away from JP O’Sullivan Park with a share of the spoils following a last gasp equalizer in the 13 a side game.

Laune Rangers got off to a good start and took a three point lead with scores from Eamonn Carey, Mike Frank Russell (free) and Patrick Carey, but Dromid responded well and pointed three of their own to draw level after 6 minutes. Pa Carey saw his shot at goal saved following a excellent team move before Jerry Coffey pointed Rangers ahead. This lead was not to last long though as Dromid earned a penalty, which was duly dispatched to put the Pearses ahead. However, Rangers were putting together some good play, and points from Jerry Coffey and Mike Frank Russell pointed to see the scores level at 1-3 to 0-6 with a quarter played.

Jerry Coffey & Eamonn Carey points were followed by an excellent goal by the younger Carey brother Patrick, following good work by Keelin Houlihan and Jerry Coffey. Rangers were full value for their five point lead at this stage, but a second penalty was awarded to Dromid late in the half & was scored to give the visitors an avenue back into the game. Cian O’Shea kicked an excellent point to see Rangers lead by two at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-9, Dromid Pearses 2-4.

Dromid got the better start to the second half and were level by the 37th minute with a couple of points, but the undoubtable score of the game then came to put Rangers ahead again – Pierce Tyther coming up from the back to receive the ball after good ball work before smashing the ball into the roof of the net to reward some great team play. Points from Kieran Doona and Eamonn Carey were cancelled out by a Dromid brace to leave Rangers ahead by 2-11 to 2-8 with 15 minutes to play.

Rangers stretched their lead with two Kieran Doona points, but Dromid once again got back into the game with a third goal to reduce the deficit to two points. The hosts were somewhat wasteful in the final minutes and Dromid got back level with a free and a point from play with the very last kick of the game to steal a draw. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-13, Dromid Pearses 3-10.

Laune Rangers will rue some missed chances in the second half that would have secured a win, but some invaluable game time were given to squad members and younger players, as well as a first full appearance in a couple of years for Mike Frank Russell.

Laune Rangers B will host Dr Crokes C in Round Three of the County Junior League on Bank Holiday Monday at 7:30pm in JP O’Sullivan Park.
