Rangers come up just short in Semi Final

Laune Rangers 2-6, Templenoe 1-12

After a titanic battle in Fitzgerald Stadium, Laune Rangers came up just short against Templenoe in the County Intermediate Championship Semi Final on Saturday afternoon. Both sides had absentees for the game – Patrick Clifford missing out for Templenoe, while Rangers had lost both Aidan Cox & Michael O’Sullivan to season ending injuries in the previous month. However, a first Senior start was handed to All Ireland Minor winner Fiachra Clifford, who was one of five Under 21s in the starting team.

Laune Rangers marquee player Peter Crowley led by example and opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a fine point. However, Templenoe dealt with the conditions better in the early stages, and went on to score six unanswered points to lead by 0-6 to 0-1 with 17 minutes played – Brian Crowley, Adrian Spillane, Stephen O’Sullivan (2) & Killian Spillane (2, 1 free) with the scores for the South Kerry side.

Templenoe were far more efficient in their score taking in the first half, as they only missed the target once in the opening period compared to Rangers’ five wides. Both defences had the upper hand for the second quarter, but Rangers did manage to tack on two pointed frees through Colm O’Shea – the first of coming from a powerful Peter Crowley run at goal that left Kieran O’Neill no option but to foul him to stop the goal – the defender escaping with a yellow card. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-3, Templenoe 0-6.

Templenoe pointed twice through Killian Spillane (free) and Cian Hallissey soon after the restart, but Laune Rangers responded well. Mike Frank Russell kicked a super point before David Costelloe had a shot saved excellently by Shane Cremin. Rangers had another great goal chance as Mike Frank Russell broke the ball at the edge of the square, but there was no-one within reach of the ball to tap it into the empty net. Laune Rangers were playing all the football at this stage, and their persistence soon paid off, when Minor player Patrick Carey showed poise beyond his years to finish to the net for a goal to reduce the deficit to the minimum. With 15 minutes to play, Templenoe led by 0-8 to 1-4.

Mike Frank Russell pointed a free to level the game before Peter Crowley gave Rangers the lead with an excellent left footed point from 50 yards. This lead was short lived, however, as Josh Crowley-Holland tied up the game with an excellent point from a near impossible angle. Templenoe got the stroke of luck in the 53rd minute to put themselves in the ideal position to claim the win – Pat Spillane’s shot taking a decisive deflection off Ronan Sayers (who couldn’t have done much to avoid it) to send the ball to the left side of Tony Lyons, who had committed to diving the opposite direction.

Killian Spillane pointed to increase Templenoe’s lead to beyond a single score and that proved crucial, as Laune Rangers got downfield once more & a Mike Frank Russell shot that dropped short was spilled by Cremin before David Costelloe got his fist to the ball to send it across the goal line. Rangers were now behind by a point as normal time expired.

Stoppages in the second half – including an injury to Adrian Spillane that saw him withdrawn in place of his goal-scoring cousin Pat – meant that there would be 4 additional minutes at the end of the game. However, Rangers would not score again but were caught by the counter-attack of Templenoe. Crowley brothers Brian and Gavin both added points before the final whistle – the latter coming from a shot at goal that was saved by Tony Lyons and forced over the bar. The Final whistle was blown to see Templenoe progress to the County Intermediate Final, where they will meet An Ghaeltacht. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-6, Templenoe 1-12.

While Laune Rangers will be disappointed with the result having had a few missed chances in the game, they can hold their heads high after a spirited effort. They now look towards a Mid Kerry Championship first round tie at home to Cromane next week.
