Mid Kerry Junior League Round 1 win for Milltown/Castlemaine

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-9, Laune Rangers 0-9

The Mid Kerry Junior League got underway on Tuesday evening, as Laune Rangers travelled to play Milltown/Castlemaine.

A third minute goal for Milltown/Castlemaine through Eoin O’Brien gave the home side the ideal start, and this would stand to be the difference between the sides until the final whistle.

Laune Rangers responded well to the concession of the early goal and were just a point behind on the quarter mark – Daniel Whittleton, Gavin O’Shea & Eamon Carey pointing for Rangers while the Milltown score was supplemented by a Jamie O’Shea point – as the hosts led by 1-1 to 0-3 after 15 minutes.

Milltown/Castlemaine were stronger in the latter part of the first half, and outscored Laune Rangers with Brendan Delaney, Jamie O’Shea, Gavin Horan & Padraig O’Brien points only met by singulars through James Lynch & Paudie O’Shea (free). Both goal areas were threatened at times during the half also, as Rangers could not make use of the aerial threat they posed while Jason Browne was forced into action a couple of times. The sides went towards the dressing room at the break with the score at Half Time:- Milltown/Castlemaine 1-5, Laune Rangers 0-5.

A pointed Jerome Flynn free opened the scoring in the second half, before Aaron Gamble got upfield to cancel it out with a well taken point. Both Rangers and Milltown threatened the opposing goal at times in the second half, as Eric Dunlea shot just wide for Rangers while Jason Browne was again called into action to save two goal opportunities.

Points would be traded for the remainder of the game, as Milltown/Castlemaine staved off the Rangers fightback. Points from Paudie O’Shea, Pa Sheehan (free), & Jack Smith (free) were cancelled out by Milltown’s Craig Counihan and Seamus Dowd (2) as the home team closed out the win.
