Opening Day Loss for Rangers

Laune Rangers 0-9, An Ghaeltacht 0-11

Glorious Spring sunshine greeted the teams in JP O’Sullivan Park on Sunday, as the County Senior Football League got up & running. Laune Rangers had Peter Crowley return to the fold on the NFL bye week, while An Ghaeltacht – while missing Marc O’Sé – had County U21 trio Cathal O’Luing, Brian O’Beaglaoich & Eanna O’Conchuir line out for them.

An Ghaeltacht got off to a flying start with two Sean M O’Conchuir points inside the first minute, but a brace of John O’Shea frees levelled matters for the hosts soon after. The lead was restored for the visitors just before the quarter mark though, as Dara O’Se pointed from distance to leave An Ghaeltacht leading by 0-3 to 0-2 after 15 minutes.

Scores were level again on the 20th minute as Laune Rangers midfielder Daniel Macbeth split the posts from a 45. The sides remained level to the short whistle as Laune Rangers points to take the lead were twice cancelled out by the visitors (Shane Daly, John O’Shea, Dara O’Se & Brian O’Beaglaoich notching up the scores). The sides towards the dressing rooms with the score at Half Time:- Laune Rangers 0-5, An Ghaeltacht 0-5.

Much like they did in the 1st half, An Ghaeltacht started much brighter after the break & two Dara O’Se frees put them ahead, but John O’Shea (free) & Pa Joy tied up the scores once again by the 38th minute. In a competitive encounter, the yellow card was flashed on a number of occasions, but the black card was produced for the first time in the 41st minute – rising star in the Kerry ranks Brian O’Beaglaoich seeing the line for a cynical foul. An Ghaeltacht again found themselves ahead by two points as Dara O’Se (free) and Sean M O’Conchuir pointed for the West Kerry side. With 15 minutes to play, An Ghaeltacht led by 0-9 to 0-7.

Laune Rangers nearly had the lead in the 47th minute, when some confusion in the small square left Michael O’Sullivan with a shot at goal, but it flashed over the crossbar for a point to leave the minimum between the sides. John O’Shea tied up the scores with another free in the 50th minute, and it looked as though little would separate the sides on the day. However, the score of the day would give the visitors the lead in the 57th minute. Seamus O’Muircheartaigh won a free near the corner flag, and Dara O’Se pointed his free from the tightest of angles – albeit with the aid of the upright. Sean M O’Conchuir doubled their advantage with a well taken point a minute later, but Rangers had a chance to win the game late on. Some great interplay eventually found Peter Crowley, only for his stunning shot at the top corner sneak wide. There was time for another black card, as Shane Daly’s cynical tackle earned him a trip to the line, and his earlier yellow card meant that he could not be replaced. An Ghaeltacht held on to claim the win and the league points in Round 1. Full Time score: Laune Rangers 0-9, An Ghaeltacht 0-11.

Laune Rangers lack of luck on opening day continues. Cousins Kieran & Peter Crowley provided the defensive spine of the team and the led their charges well, while young midfield duo Daniel Macbeth and Shane Daly continued their solid partnership. Eanna O’Conchuir settled into the game when playing a deeper role in the second half, but it was Sean M O’Conchuir and Dara O’Se who stood out on the day, scoring a combined 10 of their total of 11 points.
