Rangers open County Minor League with a win

Laune Rangers 2-14, Austin Stacks 1-12

Laune Rangers got off to the ideal start in Division One of the County Minor League as they picked up a great home win against Austin Stacks. Playing without key players in Roan Moriarty, Gearóid Hassett and Eoin Clifford, Laune Rangers also started with David Mangan in goal as the All Ireland Minor winner returns from an injury layoff.

Austin Stacks began well as, after Shane Doona had pointed to put Rangers ahead, Stacks scored the game’s first goal with a close-range palm to the net. Callum Russell scored an excellent point that was soon cancelled out by Stacks, but Rangers pointed again through Gabe Griffin and Shane Doona to tie the game up in the 9th minute. Stacks – playing against the breeze in the first half – pointed twice more (1 free) to take the lead by 1-3 to 0-4 with a quarter played.

Matthew Leslie pointed two frees in the second quarter, but Stacks scored five points in this period to take a strong lead into the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-6, Austin Stacks 1-8.

A five point deficit and playing against the breeze for the second period left Rangers with a lot to do, and it became a little harder in the opening stages of the second half as Stacks scored two more points to Rangers’ one (through a Matt Leslie free). However, the introduction of Jack Evans into goals at the break allowed David Mangan to stretch his legs outfield. Laune Rangers set about clawing their way back into the game with a 41st minute goal – Ronan O’Shea intercepting a clearance kick by the Stacks goalkeeper and applying a deft finish to halve the gap between the sides. Austin Stacks replied with a point but two Matt Leslie points (1 free) left Rangers now trailing by just two. With a quarter to play, Austin Stacks led by 1-11 to 1-9.

Laune Rangers dominated the final quarter, and a pointed free by Matt Leslie was followed by the hosts’ second goal to put Rangers ahead by two – Jack Healy tapping in after the ball was spilled as Rory O’Connor was hauled down in the square. Great defence from Rangers cut out the Stacks attack at source, and it allowed the Rangers to attack more often. Matthew Leslie added his 7th point of the game, while further scores were added by Shane Doona (2) and Gabe Griffin. Austin Stacks scored their only point of the final quarter with the final kick of the game. The final whistle was blown to give Laune Rangers a deserved win.
