Dr Crokes 2-15, Laune Rangers 1-11
Laune Rangers were defeated by Dr Crokes in the County Minor League Division One on Tuesday evening in Lewis Road.
Dr Crokes hit the net with their first attack after a minute to take an early lead, but Rangers had much the better of the opening stages. Patrick Carey got up field to score Rangers’ first point &, after Crokes had responded with a pointed free, Laune Rangers scored four unanswered points through Dáire Cleary (3 frees) and Fiachra Clifford to lead by 0-5 to 1-1 with a quarter of the game played.
Dr Crokes took over in the second quarter though, and scored seven unanswered points – six from play – to take a healthy lead into the break. Half time score:- Dr Crokes 1-8, Laune Rangers 0-5.
Laune Rangers started the second half with endeavour & consistent pressure by the visitors led to an increased foul count by Crokes. Rangers halved the deficit with three pointed frees from Fiachra Clifford (2) and Dáire Cleary before the hosts replied with three of their own – one of them from a 45 after Padraig Murphy had saved from point blank range in the Rangers goal. Shane Doona and Cian O’Shea pointed for Ranger before Dáire Cleary scored a fantastic goal, beating the majority of the Crokes defence before finding the bottom left corner of the net. This left just a point between the sides as Laune Rangers trailed by 1-11 to 1-10 with 15 minutes to play.
Dr Crokes did not allow Rangers to get level though and with five minutes to play, the lead was back to three as a Dáire Cleary free was wiped out by three further points from the hosts (1 free). Dr Crokes then missed a penalty & Padraig Ahern made two more saves to stop certain goals, but the hosts tagged on another point before finally netting their second goal in injury time. Full Time Score:- Dr Crokes 2-15, Laune Rangers 1-11.
A couple of absentees through injury were missed by Rangers, & they rued the loss of midfielder Eoin O’Sullivan with injury after 45 minutes with the game still in the balance. Patrick Carey showed the maturity that has seen him promoted to the Senior side in recent weeks, while the work rate throughout the side served them well until they began to tire late on. Laune Rangers now need results to go their way in order to qualify for the semi-final, & play Dingle away in a must win game in the final Round on Friday evening.
