Rangers mark return to Minor Championship with a win

Kerins O’Rahillys 1-9, Laune Rangers 1-17

After a five-year hiatus, Laune Rangers made their return to the County Minor Championship with a win against Kerins O’Rahillys in Strand Road on Wednesday evening.

Rangers took an early lead through Cian O’Shea in the first minute, with Aaron Roche responding with a free soon after. Rangers regained the lead through Dáire Cleary (free) and Mark O’Connor, who saw his shot from close range rise and hit the crossbar before going over, but Rahillys had the lead by the 10th minute with points from Darragh Fitzgerald (free), Shane McElligott and Aaron Roche. David Mangan got up from the back to level matters, but points for the hosts from Fitzgerald (free) and McElligott saw Kerins O’Rahillys take a two point lead by 0-6 to 0-4 with a quarter played.

Darragh Fitzgerald extended the home side’s lead before a trio of Dáire Cleary points (2 frees) had the visitors level. Cleary rattled the crossbar with an excellent effort following a superb Fiachra Clifford pass close to the break, but the Rangers forward soon had consolation for the missed goal chance as he added a 30th minute free. Half Time Score:- Kerins O’Rahillys 0-7, Laune Rangers 0-8.

Dáire Cleary added to his tally with another free with Shane Doona extending the Rangers lead with a fine point at the start of the second half. Midfielder Sean Griffin pointed well for Rahillys before Laune Rangers’ third great goal chance came and went, as Roan Moriarty saw his shot go just wide – Moriarty introduced as his teammate Darragh O’Sullivan had to withdraw with a shoulder injury. Shane Doona and Darragh Fitzgerald (free) traded points, before Rangers suffered another setback as Sean Arthurs was sent off. With a quarter of the game to play, Laune Rangers led by 0-11 to 0-9.

This lead was soon overturned when Kerins O’Rahillys were awarded a penalty, as the Laune Rangers defence were – albeit debatably – adjudged to have fouled the Rahillys attacker inside the square. Shane McElligott dispatched the penalty to give his side the lead by the minimum. The series of events seemed to put some fire in the belly of the Laune Rangers side and they drove on for the final minutes, playing like they had the extra player rather than one less. Cian O’Shea levelled the score again with an excellent point, before Fiachra Clifford gave his side the lead with two super points in the latter stages. Laune Rangers lost Mark O’Connor to a shoulder injury in the 59th minute after the forward had put in huge effort, but his replacement didn’t let his side down. Gabriel Griffin – with his first possession – received the ball and beat his marker before slotting the ball to the net for the winning goal. This took the wind from the sails of the Rahillys players, and Rangers took over for the final stages, scoring points from Shane Doona, Roan Moriarty, & Dáire Cleary to put some gloss on the scoreboard. Full Time Score:- Kerins O’Rahillys 1-9, Laune Rangers 1-17.

With 15 minutes to go, Laune Rangers were up against it in this championship tie, but they showed grit to pull themselves out of the mire with 14 men. Fiachra Clifford and Dáire Cleary showed their County credentials, playing well against double coverage much of the time, while Patrick Carey showed his experience from playing with the Senior team to lead the charges at the back. Meanwhile, the Under 16 players in the squad all put in big performances on the step up to Minor Championship football.

Laune Rangers will travel to Dingle for the next round of fixtures next Tuesday evening, July 11th. The winner will move on to the Quarter Final of the competition, while the loser will be knocked out of the Championship.
