Minors beat Rockies to reach Central Region Final

Laune Rangers 4-15, Austin Stacks 2-8

Laune Rangers have progressed to the Final of Central Region Minor Division One following victory over Austin Stacks in Killorglin on Monday evening.

Laune Rangers got off to the ideal start as midfielder Roan Moriarty scored a goal for in the first minute. Shane Doona slotted a point soon after to give Rangers a four point lead after as many minutes. Stacks hit back and produced a shot on goal, but Padraig Ahern was equal to it and pushed the ball around the post. Dáire Cleary, Roan Moriarty and Cian O’Shea all added points to give Rangers a 1-4 to 0-0 after ten minutes.

Austin Stacks opened their account with a 12th minute point, but the best move of the game produced Laune Rangers goal – a swift passing move down the left flank putting Patrick Carey through on goal and the centre-back applied a peach of a finish to the top corner of the net. Dáire Cleary pointed to increase the Rangers lead to ten points on the quarter mark. Stacks fared better in the 2nd quarter, scoring 1-4 before the short whistle, but Rangers maintained their dominance at midfield with Eoin O’Sullivan fielding excellent catches time and again. They scored a goal and three points themselves – Dáire Cleary (free) and Cian O’Shea (2) on target over the crossbar, while Eoin Evans was alert near goal to tap in a shot rebounding from the upright for Rangers’ third goal. The Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 3-8, Austin Stacks 1-5.

The third quarter was low-scoring as both defences found the upper hand for a period. Roan Moriarty pointed the first score of the half before Podge Ahern pulled off a second point blank save, while two Austin Stacks points and a well taken Patrick Carey effort saw Rangers leading by 3-10 to 1-7 with 15 minutes to play.

However, Laune Rangers kicked on again for the latter stages & extended the lead further. Dáire Cleary, Cian O’Shea & Eoin O’Sullivan points were cancelled out by a point and a rocket of a goal for Stacks – O’Sullivan’s score an excellent shot from an acute angle and just reward for an excellent performance. Roan Moriarty and Shane Doona pointed well from long range, while Doona also intercepted a short kickout to score Rangers’ 4th goal. The long whistle was blown to give Laune Rangers passage to the Central Region Division 1 Final, where they will play Kerins O’Rahillys. Details of the Final yet to be confirmed.
