Rangers Minors win at Austin Stacks

Austin Stacks 3-10, Laune Rangers 4-14

Laune Rangers Minors defeated Austin Stacks on Monday evening in Connolly Park, Tralee in the final round of fixtures in the Central Region Division One.

Both sides had a number of absentees on the evening, but that didn’t take from the free-flowing nature of the game. Laune Rangers got off to the better start in a highly enjoyable opening half, and were 4 ahead after two minutes – Shane Doona scoring a goal after Eoin O’Sullivan had pointed on the opening play. Stacks pointed twice to open their account, but Rangers continued their strong start and scored points from Gabriel Griffin and Dáire Cleary (2, 1f) to extend their lead. Austin Stacks got back into the game with a Donaghy-esque goal, after a long ball hit their full forward who fielded excellently and finished to the net. They followed up with a well taken point to leave Rangers ahead by 1-4 to 1-3 after 15minutes.

Laune Rangers responded well to the concession of the goal, and hit the net for their second goal through Gabe Griffin. Shane Doona kicked a super point from near the left touchline. The Laune Rangers defence began to gain the upper hand before the break, and points by Dáire Cleary (2) and Cian O’Shea sandwiched a Stacks brace to take the lead into the break. Half Time Score:- Austin Stacks 1-5, Laune Rangers 2-8.

A Cian O’Shea free for Rangers cancelled out an early Stacks point at the start of the second half, but the hosts hit a purple patch in a six minute period, where two goals and a point saw them take the lead for the first time by 3-7 to 2-9 with 43 minutes played. However, Rangers recovered well and, with Eoin O’Sullivan and Roan Moriarty taking control at midfield, scored 2-5 without reply in the following 7 minutes – Eoin Evans capitalzing on both a shot rebounding off the top of the post and a rebound from a save to goal twice (a well deserved return for his efforts on the evening), with the points coming from Cian O’Shea (2 1,f), Eoin O’Sullivan, Gabe Griffin, & Shane Doona. This left Rangers ahead by 4-14 to 3-7 with 8 minutes to play. Austin Stacks scored three good points in the final minutes, but a solid defensive effort from the Rangers rear-guard ensured there would be no goal scored by the home side & the young Laune Rangers side, with just 2 of the starting fifteen in their final year of Minor football, closed out a deserved win. Full Time Score:- Austin Stacks 3-10, Laune Rangers 4-14.
