Minors defeated at home by Rathmore

Laune Rangers 1-11, Rathmore 2-9

Laune Rangers hosted Rathmore on Saturday in Round 3 of the County Minor League. Laune Rangers – playing against the breeze in the first half – got the better of the opening exchanges, and led by 1-3 to 0-1 after 12 minutes as points from Patrick Daly (free), Cian O’Shea and Fiachra Clifford were added to by a well taken goal by Dáire Cleary. Rathmore had kicked a number of wides but soon found their range and three unanswered points reduced the home side’s lead to two points. A Jamie Clifford point put 3 between the sides in the 20th minute as his shot at goal flashed over the bar following great play by Fiachra Clifford & Dáire Cleary, but that lead was wiped out by a Rathmore goal soon after. The visitors closed out the half the stronger side and another goal, sandwiched between two points, gave Rathmore a 5 point lead at the break. The Half Time score:- Laune Rangers 1-4, Rathmore 2-6.

Three points from Patrick Daly (2 frees) as well as a pointed free from Fiachra Clifford gave Laune Rangers some impetus after the break, but two Rathmore points kept the scoreboard ticking over for the East Kerry side to keep a goal between the sides at 1-8 to 2-8 with a 15 minutes to play. Rathmore then pointed a free before a surge from Rangers saw points from Cian O’Shea, Patrick Daly & Fiachra Clifford (free) reduce the gap to the minimum, but a final onslaught on goal proved unsuccessful. The final whistle was blown to give victory to Rathmore by the tightest of margins. Final score: Laune Rangers 1-11, Rathmore 2-9.
