Laune Rangers 6-10, Kerins O’Rahillys 6-10
Laune Rangers hosted Kerins O’Rahillys in the Central Region Minor League on Thursday evening but with a number of players unavailable to the home side, the game was played in the reduced format of 13 per side.
Thirteen a side encounters regularly produce exciting, end to end games with high scoring and this tie proved no different. Laune Rangers led by the minimum on the quarter mark as points from Fiachra Clifford, John Francis O’Grady, Roan Moriarty (2) & Oisin Daly were answered by four from Rahillys. Kerins O’Rahillys took the lead with the first goal of the game in the 17th minute. They scored a second goal from the penalty spot six minutes later but Rangers immediately responded with a penalty of their own, which was dispatched by Patrick Daly.
Kerins O’Rahillys added a third goal late in the half, following sustained pressure on the Rangers goal where Padraig Ahern had pulled off a number of saves, but Fiachra Clifford pointed just before Half Time with the score at:- Laune Rangers 1-6, Kerins O’Rahillys 3-4.
Fiachra Clifford hit the net for Rangers’ second goal with the first play after the restart to reduce the difference between the sides to a single point. However, the Strand Road team would flourish in the third quarter and – aside from a Mark O’Connor point for Laune Rangers – Rahillys would push ahead, scoring 2-4 including the game’s third penalty. After 47 minutes, the visitors led by nine points with a scoreline of 2-7 to 5-7.
Darragh O’Sullivan found the net for Rangers to reduce the gap, only for Rahilly’s to score their sixth goal of the evening a minute later to restore their 3 goal lead going into the final ten minutes.
Having taken up a deeper role in early in the game, Patrick Daly played further forward for the second half, and scored two points (1 free) and a goal to leave just four points between the sides with six minutes left. A Rahilly’s point was answered with a 5th Laune Rangers goal by Mark O’Connor. Strand Road pointed once more to restore their lead to a goal, but in the 59th minute, Fiachra Clifford scored a fantastic goal under double coverage to tie the scores up.
Laune Rangers had a final chance to win the game, but the away defence held them out and the referee blew for full time. Full time score:- Laune Rangers 6-10, Kerins O’Rahillys 6-10.
A number of the Laune Rangers side were playing their second game in consecutive nights, as Patrick Carey, Darragh O’Sullivan, Fiachra Clifford, & Patrick Daly had all played a full game for Mid Kerry against Kenmare in the County Minor Championship Quarter Final on Wednesday evening, while Pierce Tyther & John Francis O’Grady came off the bench in that game. These players were supplemented by a number of younger players – including some Under 16s – and all players stepped up to the mark in order to rescue the draw on Thursday evening.
Patrick Daly & Fiachra Clifford, having scored 0-5 & 1-5 respectively the night before for Mid Kerry, combined for 4-4 on the night and along with Patrick Carey, provided real leadership to the younger players on the team.
