Laune Rangers retained their Senior County title on Sunday afternoon last when they overcame Sneem/Kenmare in a sunny Kilcummin.

Both sides met a few weeks prior to this when they played each other in the round game. It was to the Killorglin side who took the points on that occassion with an impressive 10 point victory. Laune Rangers were hoping to do the same again and complete their three-in-a-row. Sneem/Kenmare were hoping to make their own history with their first ever Senior League win.

Laune Rangers got off to a flying start with two points in the opening minute from Sarah Houlihan(free). Sneem/Kenmare got their first point in the second minute with Claire O’Sullivan converting a free. Geraldine Doyle was on hand to tap the ball into the back of the Laune Rangers net to level the game at 0-04 to 1-01.

Laune Rangers reply came straight away in the form of a well taken Meadhbh Johnston goal to put Rangers back in front with 9 minues played. Laune Rangers continued to attack and were rewarded with further scores from midfielder Amy Foley, two good points aswell as a beauty of a goal. The goal coming from a badly taken Sneem/Kenmare free which Laune Rangers made sure to punish.

Laune Rangers had an opportunity to push further ahead in the opening minutes of the second half when Meadhbh Johnston was fouled in the Sneem/Kenmare box. Amy Foley stepped forward to take the resulting penalty which was expertly saved by Nora Mae O’Brien in the Sneem/Kenmare goal and pushed out for a 45′. Foley passed a short ball to Patrice Dennehy who pointed for the Launesiders.

Laune Rangers notched up further scores from Meadhbh Johnston and Muireann O’Shea to extend their lead to 3-15 to 1-05 with 6 minutes of the second half played. Both sides swapped points in the minutes that followed when both side’s free-takers added to their individual tallies, Claire O’Sullivan adding a point for Sneem/Kenmare and Sarah Houlihan pointing for Laune Rangers. Laune Rangers had a chance of another goal when Sarah Jane Joy went on the attack. Joy’s shot was well saved by Nora Mae O’Brien and pushed back out to Muireann O’Shea who settled for another Rangers’ point to let the score 3-17 to 1-08 mid-way through the second half.

Sneem/Kenmare have to be commended for their positive attitude, the girls never gave up and continued to attack the Laune Rangers goals. Two further Claire O’Sullivan points were matched by Amy Foley and Sarah Jane Joy for Laune Rangers. Both sides swapped points in the dying minutes to leave the score 3-20 to 1-11 at the full-time whistle.
