Killarney Legion 2-12, Laune Rangers 4-7

Laune Rangers got the better of Killarney Legion in Direen on Friday evening following a heart-stopping last quarter that went right to the final whistle.

Little could separate the sides in the opening stages, and scores were level at 0-4 a piece at the first water break – Kerriann Hanrahan (2), Elizabeth Mohan & Isobelle Corridan scoring for Legion with Ciara O’Brien, Fodhla Houlihan (2) and Rachael Evans pointing at the other end for the visitors. Elizabeth Mohan and Fodhla Houlihan traded points before Alanna Dolan scored Laune Rangers’ first goal. Laura Brennan made a number of saves in the first half, but she was eventually beaten by Isobelle Corridan with a goal to tie the game up once again. There was time for another twist before the break though, as Legion fouled in their own square to concede a penalty. Laune Rangers goalkeeper Laura Brennan also happens to be the penalty specialist, and it was easy to see why as she placed her shot into the top corner with the final kick before the short whistle. Half Time Score:- Killarney Legion 1-5, Laune Rangers 2-5.

Elizabeth Mohan & Kerriann Hanrahan scored excellent points to reduce Rangers’ lead to the minimum, before Rangers hit the net for a third time – Fodhla Houlihan with a great finish in traffic. Elizabeth Mohan knocked over a free for Legion before it was cancelled out by a great Fodhla Houlihan point, but Legion were soon level as Kerriann Hanrahan scored Legion’s second goal followed by an Isobelle Corridan point. Legion were now on the ascendancy, as Julie Kelly, Elizabeth Mohan (free) and Isobelle Murphy all kicked points to put the home side ahead by 2-12 to 3-6.

As the teams began to tire, the final quarter became a war of attrition but Rangers drove on to grasp victory. When Alanna Dolan was fouled in the square in the 52nd minute, Laura Brennan made the journey upfield from the opposite goal to dispatch her second spot kick to the net and level the game. Both sides were on the hunt for the winner, and in fact both came close to hitting the net with shots flashing wide. Rangers edged ahead in the 61st minute with a Fodhla Houlihan point that flew just over the crossbar denying another goal, but it turned out to be enough as the Laune Rangers defence were defiant under a Legion siege to hold on for the win. Full Time Score:- Killarney Legion 2-12, Laune Rangers 4-7.

The trio of Kerriann Hanrahan, Elizabeth Mohan and Isobelle Corridan accounted for all but 0-2 of their team’s total, which was no surprise as they were outstanding for their side. For Rangers, the midfield triumvirate of Kayleigh McGlashan, Rachael Evans and Ciara O’Brien covered serious mileage with Fodhla Houlihan – much like her opposite number Hanrahan – again providing the finishing ability up front. Aside from that, Andrea Nolan was a rock at full back, while Orla Dunphy’s performance both in defence and counter attack stood out on the day.
