Under 16 Girls suffer agonising defeat

Killarney Legion 1-11, Laune Rangers 2-6

There was disappointment for the Laune Rangers Under 16 Girls on Wednesday evening as an injury time goal saw Killarney Legion take the East Kerry League title. The goal gave Legion their first lead of the game at the most opportune time, although it came following sustained pressure for most of the second half.

Laune Rangers were without regulars Andrea Nolan and Aisling Scannell on the evening, but got off to a great start. They scored two goals in the opening quarter through Alanna O’Sullivan and Nicole Moriarty as well as points from the same pair to lead by 2-2 to 0-2 with after 15 minutes. The second part of the opening period was a tighter affair as both defences gained superiority, with Lucy Knight, Hannah McGeever & Orla Dunphy putting in huge effort in blocking and tackling, while Claire Fealey stopped the shots that came her way in goals. They outscored Legion by 0-2 to 0-1 (Nessa Healy kicking two well taken scores) to take a seven point lead at the break. Half Time Score:- Killarney Legion 0-3, Laune Rangers 2-4.

Laune Rangers opened the scoring with a Nicole Moriarty free in the 3rd minute of the second half, but would have to wait 15 minutes before their next score. Legion began to chip away at the Rangers lead, and had it halved with a quarter to play with four points (1 free). With 15 minutes remaining, Laune Rangers still led by 2-5 to 0-7.

Fodhla Houlihan broke the drought for Rangers with a point, but the onslaught continued by the home team. Robust defending from Rangers – especially through Rachael Evans and Laura Brennan aided by Christina O’Brien and Kayleigh McGlashan – held off the Legion attack for as long as possible, but unfortunately the hosts’ ability to introduce fresh legs with a full complement of substitutes gave them the impetus to press on as Rangers tired. Three points for Legion (1 free) left two between the sides as the game progressed into additional time. Legion’s persistence paid off eventually as an unstoppable shot to the top corner finally beat Claire Fealey to deny Rangers the win. Legion added another point from a free before the final whistle to claim the trophy. Full Time Score: Killarney Legion 1-11, Laune Rangers 2-6.

Laune Rangers Team:- Claire Fealey, Laura Brennan, Lucy Knight, Christina O’Brien, Orla Dunphy, Rachael Evans, Hannah McGeever, Alanna Dolan, Nicole Moriarty (1-2), Lorna Griffin, Kayleigh McGlashan, Nessa Healy (0-2), Alanna O’Sullivan (1-1), Fodhla Houlihan (0-1), Amy Dunphy. Subs:- Orla Browne, Millie Foley.

Laune Rangers 3-10, Glenflesk 5-4

In a highly entertaining contest in JP O’Sullivan Park on Thursday evening, Laune Rangers and Glenflesk finished all square in the East Kerry Under 16 League.

Laune Rangers had a great start and opened the scoring with a great goal through Nicole Moriarty. Alanna O’Sullivan added a point to Rangers four ahead with 6 minutes played. However, Glenflesk had the lead by the 18th minute, as two points were followed by the visitors’ first goal. Amy Dunphy tied up scores in the 19th minute with a point, but Glenflesk scored two goals in as many minutes to take a commanding lead. Nessa Healy pointed for Rangers before the hosts won a 26th minute penalty, which was duly dispatched by corner back Laura Brennan. Points for by Nicole Moriarty & Amy Dunphy followed for Rangers before Glenflesk netted their fourth goal. Nicole Moriarty saw a late point nullified by Glenflesk to see the sides separated by three points at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-6, Glenflesk 4-3.

Glenflesk extended their lead at the start of the second half, but Rangers responded well, and Claire Fealey made a couple of fine saves after going in to goals for the second half. Nicole Moriarty scored her second and Rangers’ third goal while Aisling Scannell levelled the game up in the 47th minute, but the home side fell behind again almost immediately when Glenflesk scored their 5th goal. This left Glenflesk ahead by 5-4 to 3-7 with almost a quarter to play.

Rangers defence was outstanding for the final quarter, as Laura Brennan & Lucy Knight patrolled the large parallelogram in front of an impressive Claire Fealey. This allowed those in front of her to push forward. Nicole Moriarty and Nessa Healy reduced the deficit to the minimum as Rangers pushed on, before Orla Browne kicked an equalizer late on. Rangers continued to push for the winner, with Rachael Evans covering the whole field in persistant running, with Kayleigh McGlashan and Andrea Nolan in support. However, the winning score would not come for either team and the sides finished all square – a fair result after an exciting game. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 3-10, Glenflesk 5-4.

Rangers Girls win U15 C Championship

Laune Rangers 5-12, Beaufort 2-4

Laune Rangers Girls blew off the post-Puck blues in style as they defeated local rivals Beaufort in the County Under 15 C Championship on Sunday afternoon in a wet JP O’Sullivan Park. The mostly dry conditions that had graced Killorglin for the previously three days gave way to a number of showers during that game, but Rangers were ahead from the outset in an impressive performance.

Laune Rangers scored an unanswered 1-3 before Beaufort registered their first point – early scores from Nessa Healy (2) and Fodhla Houlihan complemented by a penalty converted by Houlihan after Aisling Scannell had been brought down in the square. Beaufort got off the mark with a couple of points (1 free) before Rangers scored their second goal through Aisling Scannell. Another Nessa Healy point saw Rangers lead by 2-4 to 0-2 with a quarter played.

The scoreboard didn’t tell the full story of the first half, as Beaufort were creating many scoring chances but the Rangers defence was excellent. Laune Rangers third goal came from Fodhla Houlihan as her free from 20 metres out dropped in under the crossbar, while Aisling Scannell pointed to increase the lead to 12. At the back, Claire Fealey made sure the lead didn’t shorten as she pulled off a couple of excellent saves from point blank range. Points were traded between Beaufort (a free) and Laune Rangers (through Rachael Evans) before Fodhla Houlihan completed a first half hat-trick with Rangers’ 4th goal just before the short whistle. Half Time score:- Laune Rangers 4-6, Beaufort 0-3.

Laune Rangers continued to turn the screw at the start of the second half, with a Fodhla Houlihan point and another goal – this time from Caragh Browne with a cool finish. However, these scores were both nullified soon after as Beaufort hit the net for their first goal and added a point a minute later. Points by Nessa Healy and Zara Foley for Rangers were both excellently taken but were soon cancelled out and more as Beaufort scored their second goal, leaving Laune Rangers leading by 5-9 to 2-4 with 15 minutes to play.

Laune Rangers’ defenders showed their steel and grit in the final quarter as they held firm and held out the Beaufort attack and, with Nessa Healy and Fodhla Houlihan (2) adding points at the other end, they closed out the game to win the County Under 15 C Championship with an excellent performance. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 5-12, Beaufort 2-4.

Laune Rangers forwards on the day were on fire, with 5 of the starting 6 all scoring from play & the sixth – Hannah McGeever – assisted in a number of 1st half scores before moving to the backs in the second half. The midfield duo of Rachael Evans and Alanna Dolan provided the engine of the team with seemingly endless runs between the two sets of posts. Goalkeeper Claire Fealey pulled off two great saves and her kickouts and long passing were excellent. In front of her, the backs put in a big defensive effort with a great half back line performance led by centre-back Christina O’Brien.

Laune Rangers:- Claire Fealey, Orla Browne, Ava Griffin, Lauren Griffin, Orla Dunphy (capt), Christina O’Brien, Andrea Nolan, Rachael Evans (0-1), Alanna Dolan, Zara Foley (0-1), Fodhla Houlihan (3-4), Hannah McGeever, Caragh Browne (1-0), Nessa Healy (0-5), Aisling Scannell (1-1). Subs (all played): Millie Foley, Melanie Sugrue, Aoife Nash Freeman.

U15 Semi Final win for Rangers Ladies

Laune Rangers 2-15, Dr Crokes 4-3

Laune Rangers qualified for the County Under 15 C Championship Final on Tuesday evening following an excellent Semi Final win against Dr Crokes in JP O’Sullivan Park.

Laune Rangers started well, scoring five points through Fodhla Houlihan (3, 1 free), Nessa Healy and Hannah McGeever, but a good recovery by Crokes saw them score two goals and a point in the following minutes to see the visitors lead 2-1 to 0-5 with a quarter played.

Rangers took the game by the scruff of the neck once again, and to Nessa Healy points levelled matters before Rachael Evans pointed Rangers ahead – a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Fodhla Houlihan (free) and Nessa Healy points were followed by a Fodhla Houlihan goal, but Crokes responded with 1-1 of their own late on. A final Fodhla Houlihan free gave Rangers a three point lead going into the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-11, Dr Crokes 3-2.

The second half saw fewer scores, but was played with high intensity, as the Laune Rangers backs held off sustained pressure. Fodhla Houlihan added 1-1 to her tally to see Rangers lead by 2-12 to 3-2 with a quarter to play, but Crokes got back into it with a goal and point of their own. However, Rangers were better in the final stages and points from Aisling Scannell and Fodhla Houlihan (2, 1 free) closed the game out – Scannell’s point in particular coming from a great team move. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-15, Dr Crokes 4-3.

Under 16 Girls first game of season ends in narrow defeat.

Laune Rangers 2-13, Castleisland 3-12

Laune Rangers Under 16 Girls were defeated in their opening game of the season on Monday evening in a County League tie against Castleisland Desmonds played at Cloon pitch.

Laune Rangers had much the better of the opening half and scored ten points with the aid of the wind, but two goals for Casteisland kept them in touch and the sides went in at the break all square – Rachael Evans scoring five points in the period, with Kayleigh McGlashan (2), Fodhla Houlihan (2) & Andrea Nolan adding to the Rangers tally. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-10, Castleisland Desmonds 2-4.

The visitors got much the better start to the second half, and scored their third goal and a brace of points within two minutes of the restart. Points from Kayleigh McGlashan and Nicole Moriarty (free) were cancelled out by a couple of Desmonds points before Rachael Evans added her sixth of the evening to leave Rangers trailing by 0-13 to 3-8 with fifteen minutes to play. Desmonds scored four further points in the latter stages, while late goals for Rangers through Fodhla Houlihan and Alanna O’Sullivan gave the Rangers hope. However, Desmonds held on to win by two points. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 2-13, Castleisland Desmonds 3-12.

In all, not the worst of starts to the season for the team. Rachael Evans got some great scores for Rangers on the evening to keep the scoreline ticking over, while she was ably abetted by Kayleigh McGlashan and Fodhla Houlihan who chipped in with another 1-5 between them. In defence, Lucy Knight marshalled the middle channel well from centre back, while Lucy O’Donnell and Alanna Dolan were there in support from the wings. A great read and interception by Christina O’Brien was the other defensive highlight.

Laune Rangers: Amy Dunphy, Orla Browne, Laura Brennan, Christina O’Brien, Alanna Dolan, Lucy Knight, Lucy O’Donnell, Rachael Evans (0-6), Kayleigh McGlashan (0-3), Andrea Nolan (0-1), Fodhla Houlihan (1-2), Alanna O’Sullivan (1-0), Hannah McGeever, Nicole Moriarty (0-1), Aisling Scannell. Ladies County Senior League Division 3 Round 2:- Laune Rangers vs Currow. 14/4/17

The Laune Rangers Senior Ladies squad that faced Currow on Good Friday evening.

Laune Rangers 1-8, Currow 5-7

Laune Rangers Senior Ladies hosted Currow on Friday evening in the County League Division Three. Laune Rangers had a number of absentees with as many as ten players missing through injury or work commitments.

After taking an early lead with a point through Nicole Moriarty, Currow hit Rangers with three goals in five minutes, adding a point for good measure. Megan Gamble (free), Kayleigh McGlashan & Fodhla Houlihan pointed for Rangers as they began to put some good play together, but Rangers were dealt a hammer blow as Currow goaled twice more late in the half to leave 12 points between the sides at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers 0-4, Currow 5-1.

Rangers were much better in defence in the second half as Laura Brennan, Lucy Knight and Katie Halpenny cleared the lines time and again, while Kayleigh McGlashan, Andrea Nolan linked the defence to attack. However, the team were unable to convert their dominance of possession into scores, kicking a total of 11 wides in the second half. Fodhla Houlihan & Nicole Moriarty cancelled out two Currow points before Moriarty kicked the best point of the game, followed by a point for Andrea Nolan and an Yvonne Sheehan goal to reduce the deficit to seven points. Unfortunately, they would be unable to close the gap any further as Currow kicked 4 points in injury time add further gloss to the score line. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers 1-8, Currow 5-7.

It was an unfortunate scoreline that did no justice to the balance of play in the game. The five goals in the first half proved too much for Rangers to come back from, but this young team continue to find their feet and will continue to improve as a result.

Laune Rangers:- Katie Graham, Lauren Hurley, Laura Brennan, Lucy O’Donnell, Katie Halpenny, Lucy Knight, Maeve O’Sullivan, Rachael Evans, Andrea Nolan (0-1), Nicole Moriarty (0-3), Kayleigh McGlashan (0-1), Yvonne Sheehan (1-0), Alanna O’Sullivan, Megan Gamble (0-1), Emma Cronin. Subs: Fodhla Houlihan (0-2), Fiona Brennan, Rebecca Murray, Anne Marie Fealey.

Senior Ladies defeated in opening League game

No Luck for Rangers but encouraging start from young team

Laune Rangers 0-5, Listowel Emmets 2-4

Laune Rangers Senior Ladies got their County League campaign under way on Sunday morning with a home tie against Listowel Emmets, played at JP O’Sullivan Park. Rangers were without the services of a number of players on the day, and fielded a very young side as a result.

A strong cross-field breeze caused issues for both sides in the opening half, as the visiting side were more efficient in their score taking, scoring 1-2 from 4 shots at goal in the first period. At the other end, Rangers could not find the rub of the green as a couple of shots dragged wide, while they also forced the Listowel goalkeeper into making excellent saves on three separate occasions including one from a penalty. Rangers did manage one point in the half, as Megan Gamble kicked a great point from play. Half Time score:- Laune Rangers 0-1, Listowel Emmets 1-2.

Laune Rangers started the second half brightly, as corner forward Emma Cronin kicked two well taken points in quick succession to halve the deficit. However, Listowel stopped the Rangers momentum with their second goal to put themselves 5 points ahead. Further Rangers points from Laune Rangers through Kayleigh McGlashen and Andrea Nolan were nullified by a brace from Emmets and the home side were unable to capitalize on their superiority in possession to reduce the gap. Final score:- Laune Rangers 0-5, Listowel Emmets 2-4.

While the side were unhappy to lose the game, it was not too poor a performance for the first game of the season. A very young team will gain experience with every game and the results are sure to follow.

Laune Rangers: Claire Fealey, Lauren Hurley, Laura Brennan, Maeve O’Sullivan, Katie Halpenny, Andrea Nolan, Sarah Clifford, Rachael Evans, Kayleigh McGlashen, Alanna O’Sullivan, Nicole Moriarty, Megan Gamble, Emma Cronin, Yvonne Sheehan, Fiona Brennan. Subs (all played): Ava Griffin, Roisin O’Hara, Jade O’Connor, Anne Marie Fealey.
